While the NFL playoff picture is still far from set, the early set of games did provide some clarity for the 2012 NFL Draft. With a 19-13 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars in their final game of the season, the Indianapolis Colts locked up the No. 1 pick in the draft for the first team since 1998, when they selected Peyton Manning.
The St. Louis Rams have been no stranger to the top of the draft, as the 2012 NFL Draft will mark the fourth time in the past five years that the Rams have had a Top 2 pick. The Rams clinched the second pick with a 34-27 loss to the San Francisco 49ers. The Rams selected Jason Smith No. 2 overall in the 2009 NFL draft and selected Chris Long No. 2 overall in the 2008 NFL draft.
The third pick belongs to the Minnesota Vikings, who fell to the Chicago Bears in their season-finale. The last team that the Minnesota Vikings had a pick in the Top 10, they selected Adrian Peterson with the No. 7 pick in the 2007 draft.

An early lead turned into a huge deficit before the St. Louis Rams made an impressive comeback, but they were unable to pull off the upset in a 34-27 defeat against the San Francisco 49ers. The win clinches the No. 2 seed in the NFC for the 49ers, who will now receive a first-round bye in the postseason.
San Francisco took a 20-7 lead into halftime and extended that lead to 27-10 after three quarters, but St. Louis didn't simply back down even with nothing to play for. Quarterback Kellen Clemens led the offense on a 10-play, 45-yard drive just a couple minutes into the fourth quarter to cut the lead to two scores, but San Francisco extended its lead to 34-13 after another touchdown.
The Rams made things awfully interesting, though. First came an impressive 36-yard touchdown pass from Clemens to wide receiver Brandon Lloyd:
That score cut the lead to 34-20. And after recovering an onside kick at midfield, the Rams went down the field and scored another touchdown to cut the lead to just seven points. They would get the ball back again after a defensive stop, but they couldn't score again to complete the comeback. San Francisco managed to get a few first downs and run out the clock.
San Francisco only gained ten more yards than St. Louis, but they benefited greatly from recovering two Rams fumbles while avoiding any turnovers of their own. San Francisco finishes the year at 13-3, while the Rams finish at 2-14.

Recently, the injury bug has avoided St. Louis Rams running back Steven Jackson, but it came back to bite him against the San Francisco 49ers. In the final game of the 2011 season, Jackson has injured his left arm, and the team has announced that his return to the game is "questionable" at this point.
If Jackson's season is over, he ends with 260 carries for 1145 yards, a seventh consecutive 1000-yard season for the star running back. This season, he's also caught 41 passes for 318 yards, scoring six touchdowns in total. He surpassed 100 yards in a game on four different occasions, and he could potentially get to that figure against San Francisco if he's able to return.

The San Francisco 49ers showed why they're the NFC West champions in the second quarter of Sunday's game against the St. Louis Rams. After trailing 7-0 early, the 49ers have scored 20 unanswered points to take a 20-7 lead going into halftime as they try to clinch the No. 2 seed in the NFC.
Quarterback play is a key part of why the 49ers are leading. Alex Smith has been fantastic for San Francisco, completing 14 of 20 passes for 158 yards and a touchdown while running in another. The Rams, meanwhile, have struggled in the passing game. Kellen Clemens has completed just 4 of 10 passes for 66 yards, he's been sacked twice, and Jerious Norwood threw an interception on a trick play.

You can credit the St. Louis Rams for being creative, but that creativity didn't lead to positive results in one instance against the San Francisco 49ers. In a tied game with a potential upset on the line, the 49ers tried to shoot big with a trick play, but it ended with a turnover and, eventually, a 49ers touchdown.
The play was a designed direct snap to running back Jerious Norwood, who reminded us all that he's not a quarterback:
The play was apparently intended to have quarterback Kellen Clemens catch the ball on the other sideline, but the 49ers defense properly reacted to the trickery and Tarell Brown was able to intercept the pass. With San Francisco taking possession in St. Louis territory, scoring wasn't too much trouble. The 49ers needed only two plays to get into the end zone after the turnover, as Alex Smith completed a 28-yard touchdown pass to Michael Crabtree.

The St. Louis Rams are hoping to foil the San Francisco 49ers' attempts to clinch the No. 2 seed in the NFC, but they're trailing 14-7 at home after taking an early lead. The 49ers have lost just three games all season, so the Rams are eyeing a major upset here.
A rare rushing touchdown allowed by the San Francisco defense helped to put the Rams up initially, as quarterback Kellen Clemens scampered in from 18 yards out in impressive fashion:
The Rams haven't been able to get on the scoreboard since then, though, as the 49ers have rumbled back to take the lead. Quarterback Alex Smith has accounted for both of San Francisco's touchdowns, with an 8-yard run to tie the game and a 28-yard pass to Michael Crabtree to take the lead. The 49ers got into position to score the second touchdown on a failed trick play by the Rams, as running back Jerious Norwood's pass was intercepted by Tarell Brown in St. Louis territory.

The big news for the San Francisco 49ers in Week 17 is that star middle linebacker Patrick Willis is active on Sunday for the first time since December 4, providing him a week to tune up before the team heads into the NFC playoffs. On the offensive side of the ball, though, the Niners will be shorthanded, with wide receiver and punt returner Ted Ginn Jr. listed as inactive alongside fellow WR Kyle Williams. The Niners will also be without tight end Delanie Walker.

With the St. Louis Rams placing QB Sam Bradford on the inactive list for their Week 17 match up vs. the San Francisco Niners, the Kellen Clemens era in St. Louis will last for at least one more game. Bradford is joined on the inactive list by fellow QB A.J. Feeley, meaning that the team's back up QB on Sunday will be Tim Brandstater.
The Rams will also be short in the secondary today, with two key corners being listed as inactive, but that's a feeling that the team has had to get used to this season.
Here's the full inactive list for the Rams:

The St. Louis Rams are officially at the bottom of the barrel now, thanks to the recent run by the Indianapolis Colts, so it is no surprise the San Francisco 49ers are heavy favorites heading into Week 17 of NFL action. You would think some experts who are behind in their staff picks for the season would at least try to take the long shot and hope to make up ground, but apparently the desire to play the odds is too strong. ESPN has released Week 17 picks, and every member of the eight-man panel has selected the San Francisco 49ers to win the final game of the regular season and lock up the number two seed in the NFC playoff bracket. Honestly, Rams fans might actually be cheering for a loss just to maximize the team's draft position headed into the 2012 NFL Draft.

The San Francisco 49ers Friday injury update has been released by the team, and a handful of players' statuses are in doubt heading into the weekend.
Wide receiver Ted Ginn Jr. (ankle), wide receiver Kyle Williams (concussion), cornerback Chris Culliver (shoulder), running back Bruce Miller (knee), cornerback Carlos Rogers (knee) and linebacker Patrick Willis (hamstring) are listed as questionable for Sunday's game against the St. Louis Rams. Neither Ginn nor Williams were able to practice at all this week. Culliver, Miller, Rogers and Willis have been limited in practice all week.
Tight end Delanie Walker (jaw) has been ruled out for Sunday's game.

The St. Louis Rams look poised to once again be without the services of their top two quarterbacks in Sunday's game against the San Francisco 49ers. The Rams official injury report for Week 17 looks like this:
- QB Sam Bradford
- QB A.J. Feeley
- DE Chris Long
- RB/KR Jerious Norwood
- CB Josh Gordy
- LB Brady Poppinga
The past two weeks, the Rams have started third-string quarterback Kellen Clemens as both Bradford and Feeley work their ways back from injuries. Clemens performed admirably in Week 15, but quite poorly in Week 16.
The Rams will be hoping for a solid contribution from the 7-year veteran QB as a few other Rams contributors will be ailing against the 49ers. Not only is their top kick returner, Jerious Norwood, probable with an illness, but the team's best pass rusher -- DE Chris Long -- may miss the contest with a troublesome ankle.

The San Francisco 49ers are a better team, a more talented team and a more motivated team than the St. Louis Rams in Week 17, and the odds makers have been sure to acknowledge that fact. SB Nation's partner, Odds Shark, has released odds for Week 17 in the NFL, and the 49ers opened at 10.5 point favorites to win the game. Since the spread has opened, it has moved up to 11 and 12 points on several sites tracked by Odds Shark.
With quarterback Sam Bradford in serious doubt for the game, odds makers expect a fairly low-scoring affair. The over/under for the game opened at 36 points and has moved down to 35.5 since that time. The 49ers defense has been stout all season long, and the Rams offense has been nothing short of an embarrassment most weeks. To reach the over it would likely take a blowout by the 49ers, coupled with a garbage-time touchdown from the Rams.

The San Francisco 49ers are preparing to cap off a successful regular season in St. Louis, but they're a little banged up heading into the weekend, as illustrated by their latest injury report.
Wide receiver Ted Ginn Jr. (ankle), tight end Delanie Walker (jaw) and wide receiver Kyle Williams (concussion) have not been able to participate in practice either Wednesday or Thursday. Cornerback Chris Culliver (shoulder), running back Bruce Miller (knee), cornerback Carlos Rogers (knee) and linebacker Patrick Willis (hamstring) have been limited in 49ers practice each of the last two days.
San Francisco currently holds the No. 2 seed in the NFC playoff picture, but a loss coupled with a win by the New Orleans Saints would drop them to No. 3.

The St. Louis Rams (2-13) appear ready to give QB Kellen Clemens his third consecutive NFL start on Sunday. The top two quarterbacks on the roster -- Sam Bradford and A.J. Feeley -- both missed practice again on Thursday and appear increasingly likely to miss their third straight game:
Rams done with Thursday practice. QBs Sam Bradford (ankle) and A.J. Feeley (thumb), RB Jerious Norwood (illness) did not participate.
The Rams recently signed journeyman QB Kellen Clemens in order to have at least two healthy QBs on the roster, and in Clemens' first start -- a 13-20 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals -- he performed expertly, passing for 229 yards and 1 touchdown while completing nearly 70% of his passes.
In the following week, against the vaunted Pittsburgh Steelers defense, Clemens completed only 37.5% of his passes for 91 yards and a 49.1 QB Rating.
The Rams may also be without backup running back and kick returner Jerious Norwood. In his eight games in 2011, Norwood has averaged 25.3 yards per kick return.

The San Francisco 49ers are desperately fighting to earn a first-round bye in the NFC playoffs, while the St. Louis Rams are just plain desperate. Experts around the league can't find a good reason to pick the Rams to win, and how you can add another to the pile. Vinnie Iyer of AOL Sporting News has released picks for Week 17 in the NFL, and he believes the Rams will finish out the season the victim of an embarrassing blowout loss:
The 49ers showed their fight in Seattle last week, and they'll be very businesslike in another division road game they should dominate. For all the efforts they've put into the big turnaround under Jim Harbaugh, they're not about to let the NFC's No. 2 seed slip away. You can expect one Ram to go full tilt-running back Steven Jackson-while the others are just waiting for the imminent regime change. The goal will be to avoid a shutout sweep vs. San Francisco in front of the home fans. 49ers 30, Rams 3.
Iyer is 160-80 for the season-to-date and went 12-4 straight up in Week 16.

The St. Louis Rams are 2-13 and have lost six games in a row heading into NFL action in Week 17, while the San Francisco 49ers are 12-3 and looking to lock up a first-round bye in the NFC playoffs. There is very little reason to think the Rams will come out an match the intensity or execution of a very good 49ers team with more than ample motivation to play well, so experts are understandably down on the Rams' chances.
The five-man panel at CBS Sports has released picks for Week 17, and all five experts believe the Rams will lose the season finale. Pete Prisco explained his prediction that the Rams will close out the season on a seven-game losing streak like this:
The 49ers can lock up the No. 2 seed in the NFC with a victory here. They are playing consecutive road games in the division, which can be tough, but the Rams don't do enough on offense to beat them. The 49ers defense will be suffocating against the Rams. They take the No. 2 seed.

The St. Louis Rams are hoping to end their season on a high note by upsetting the San Francisco 49ers, but they may have to do so with Kellen Clemens at quarterback as the team's injury woes at the position continue. Both Sam Bradford and A.J. Feeley were unable to practice on Wednesday as they nurse injuries, which could leave the team settling for Clemens behind center once again.
The Rams' full injury report can be found here, but it's shown below:
- CB Josh Gordy
- DE Chris Long
- QB Sam Bradford
- QB A.J. Feeley
- LB Brady Poppinga
The other big name here is Long, but he's expected to play on Wednesday. Having to play Clemens would probably be disappointing after his rough performance against the Pittsburgh Steelers last week, although he looked much better in the preceding week against the Cincinnati Bengals.

The San Francisco 49ers have a chance to clinch the No. 2 seed in the NFC for this year's postseason by defeating the struggling St. Louis Rams on Sunday, but they're still trying to get some players healthy at this point in the week. The expectation at this point is that star linebacker Patrick Willis will play after missing the team's past three games while dealing with a hamstring strain.
Key players missing from practice on Wednesday include wide receivers Kyle Williams and Ted Ginn Jr., so the 49ers may be short on offensive weapons when they face the Rams this weekend. San Francisco's full injury report for Wednesday can be found here, but it's show below:
- LB Patrick Willis
- CB Carlos Rogers
- RB Bruce Miller
- CB Chris Culliver
- WR Kyle Williams
- WR Ted Ginn Jr.
- TE Delanie Walker
The 49ers could be weakened offensively this weekend if they don't have Ginn and Williams this weekend. The team recently released Braylon Edwards, so the team only has Michael Crabtree, Josh Morgan, Brett Swain and Dontavia Bogan at wide receiver on the active roster at the moment.
