St. Louis Cardinals Rumors: Jason Motte Contract Talks Grow Multiple Years

Jason Motte, the last St. Louis Cardinals piece under team control and unsigned for 2012 after the Cardinals tendered Kyle McClellan a contract for whatever reason, may be going multiple years for their new closer according to a Twitter report from Joe Strauss of the Post-Dispatch. Motte, under team control until after the 2014 season, picked up nine saves this year, which makes him less than a proven closer but more than a set-up man, if you're trying to keep track.

Both sides have plenty of leverage here—the Cardinals have him under team control anyway, and know he's yet to get a big payout at 30 years old, while Motte could go another year, accumulate saves, and potentially earn a much larger arbitration award.

Meanwhile, it might be worth wondering if John Mozeliak has a thing for veteran relievers. The good news, I guess, is that even if that's the case his last two veteran relievers have been ones he helped develop. The better news would be if he somehow developed a thing for converted-catcher-relievers, who are all awesome.
