The St. Louis Cardinals signed veteran infielder Ty Wigginton to a two-year deal.
Wigginton, 35, played for the Philadelphia Phillies in 2012, and has played for seven major league teams total. Wigginton recorded 360 plate appearances in 125 games for the Phillies, hitting .235/.314/.375 over that time frame. The Bill James projection system estimates Wigginton will hit .241/.314/.375 next season.
Wigginton used to be classified as a utility infielder, since he could start at second base if needed. His range on defense has declined, and the past two seasons the Phillies and Colorado Rockies have mostly played him at the corner infield spots. The infielder has also seen some time in left field to hide his defense.
