2012 Daytona 500: Rain Delays Start Time

Rain wil prevent the 2012 Daytona 500 from beginning on time, as SB Nation's Jeff Gluck reports. Gluck wrote less than an hour ago that rain, which started at roughly 10:30 p.m. EST, was still coming down at Daytona International Speedway.

Considering that the track takes roughly two hours to dry, NASCAR's scheduled starting time of 1:29 p.m. EST will prove to be far too early. Gluck reminds us that Daytona is equipped with lights, though, so fans could be treated to a primetime finish to this year's race.

Never before has the Daytona 500 been delayed in its 53-year history, so we're delving into some unusual territory here. Gluck notes that this year's race started unusually late compared to past races, though, as NASCAR wanted to avoid any possible conflicts with the Super Bowl.
