St. Bonaventure Vs. Xavier Final Score: Bonnies Win 67-56, Land NCAA Tournament Bid

The St. Bonaventure Bonnies are going to the NCAA Tournament this year after beating the Xavier Musketeers, 67-56, in the Atlantic 10 Championship Game on Sunday afternoon. Considered an unlikely bubble team after an up-and-down regular season, the Bonnies landed an automatic bid by winning the conference tournament.

After taking a sizable early lead, St. Bonaventure just needed to hold off rallies from Xavier. A few unanswered points to begin the second half gave the Bonnies a 41-24 lead, but the Musketeers proceeded to go on a 11-0 run to trim the lead to six points. Xavier never got any closer than four points, though, as St. Bonaventure constantly matched rallies and ultimately pulled away at the end.

Both teams shot poorly during the game, as neither team shot above 40 percent from the field for the game. The Bonnies had clear advantages on the boards and at the charity stripe, though, making up for some issues with losing possessions.

Andrew Nicholson had a positively huge game for St. Bonaventure, putting up 26 points, 14 rebounds and eight blocks in a dominant effort. No other Bonnie scored in double-figures. Xavier got 17 points from Tu Holloway and 16 points from Mark Lyons.

St. Bonaventure Vs. Xavier Score Update: Bonnies Lead 37-24 At Halftime

The St. Bonaventure Bonnies are leading 37-24 over the Xavier Musketeers going into halftime at the Atlantic 10 Title Game following a strong first half performance. The Bonnies led for the vast majority of the half, even holding a double-digit lead most of the time.

After three minutes in the first half, Xavier held a 2-0 lead, but the Bonnies would go on a 19-5 run over the next six minutes to build a sizable lead. From there, St. Bonaventure extended its lead to as many as 16 points before going until the half up 13. Xavier really struggled with its shooting in the first half, making just 9-of-25 shots from the field while missing all six of its three-point attempts.

Andrew Nicholson leads the Bonnies with 12 points and five rebounds, as well as two blocked shots. Tu Holloway leads Xavier with 11 points on 4-of-6 shooting from the field. The winner of the game receives an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament, which has its bracket announced on Sunday night.

Atlantic 10 Tournament 2012: Bracket, Schedule And More

The Xavier Musketeers may have played their way into an at-large bid to the 2012 NCAA Tournament by advancing to the championship game of the 2012 Atlantic 10 Tournament, but for the St. Bonaventure Bonnies, Sunday's game represents their only chance of landing a spot in the Big Dance. Both teams are also in unfamiliar positions as they prepare for Sunday's game. For the Musketeers, who have made the NCAA Tournament in 10 of the past 11 years, being firmly on the bubble is a bit of unknown territory. The Bonnies, meanwhile, haven't been this close to a tournament birth since they last made the field of 64 in 2000.

It's been a rousing tournament for the upstart Bonnies, who have defeated the St. Joseph's Hawks and the Massachusetts Minutemen by a combined seven points. Xavier meanwhile skated to a one point victory over the Dayton Flyers before defeating the St. Louis Billikens by seven points on Saturday. The Musketeers and Bonnies met once this season, way back on January 14, when Xavier came out on top by a score of 77-64. In that game, guard Mark Lyons picked up a struggling Tu Holloway with 21 points and five assists.

Game date/time: Sunday, March 11, 12:00 p.m. CT

Location: Boardwalk Hall, Atlantic City, New Jersey

TV: CBS

Odds: Xavier by 3

Saint Louis Vs. Xavier Score Update: Musketeers Advance To Finals

One of the main components to the great success that Saint Louis has had all season has been the consistent excellence on the defensive end of the court. Unfortunately for the Billikens, they had no answer for the talented Xavier guards in the semifinal matchup of the Atlantic 10 Tournament, as the Musketeers delivered an impressive offensive performance in the 71-64 win. Xavier will face St. Bonaventure in the finals, with a guaranteed spot in the NCAA Tournament on the line.

Brian Conklin led the way for Saint Louis in the loss, scoring a team-high 14 points on 4/9 shooting from the field. Dwayne Evans and Jordair Jett each chipped in 11 points, while Kwamain Mitchell finished with 10 points and a team-high nine assists.

The Billikens had no answer for the Xavier offense, which executed at a high level throughout the game. The Musketeers shot 53.3% from the field as team, with Tu Holloway netting a game-high 21 points. Dezmine Wells added 18 points on 6/8 shooting from the field, while Mark Lyons scored 14 points and grabbed six rebounds.

Saint Louis Vs. Xavier Score Update: Billikens Trail 29-23

Despite the fact that Saint Louis has already locked up a berth in the NCAA Tournament, the Billikens arrived in Atlantic City with the intention to win the Atlantic 10 Tournament and improve their seeding. However, the Billikens have seen how good Xavier can be when it is clicking, as Saint Louis trails 29-23 at the half of this semifinal matchup.

Although he struggled with his shot, hitting just 2/8 from the field, Kwamain Mitchell made a big impact in the opening 20 minutes. Mitchell netted a team-high eight points and also dished out two assists and grabbed two rebounds. Saint Louis shot only 7/24 from the field in the opening half and was out-rebounded by seven.

The trio of Tu Holloway, Kenny Frease and Mark Lyons led the Musketeers. The three combined to score 18 of Xavier's 29 points, despite shooting a combined 6/16 from the field. Xavier did an excellent job of working into an offensive rhythm, as it assisted on seven of the 11 made field goals in the opening half.

Atlantic 10 Tournament 2012: St. Louis An Overwhelming Favorite, According To Ken Pom Projections

The St. Louis Billikens are the No. 2 seed in the Atlantic-10 men's basketball tournament, but Ken Pomeroy's projections are high on the Billikens to win the conference title heading into the NCAA Tournament. They are likely safe to make March Madness anyways, but earning a bit of momentum couldn't be considered a bad thing. They await the winner of Tuesday's first round game between the No. 7 seed La Salle Explorers and No. 10 Richmond Spiders, and the top-seeded Temple Owls are the real threat to their title hopes.

Bill Connelly of SB Nation wrote an excellent Atlantic 10 Tournament Preview, and he brought up just why the numbers like the St. Louis Billikens so much:

Who The Numbers Like

St. Louis. Ken Pomeroy's projections say Rick Majerus' Billikens are the overwhelming favorite, with a 44.1 percent chance of taking home the conference's automatic bid. Temple has a 19.9 percent chance, and everybody else is under nine percent. George Washington has a 0.07 percent chance; so do not put money on the 10-20 Colonials. SLU ranks a staggering 12th overall in Pomeroy's rankings, 37th on offense (powered by great ball control and decent shooting) and 11th on defense (they force both bad shots and turnovers and they rebound well). They are certainly capable of slip-ups -- in December, they lost to Loyola Marymount after whipping the likes of Washington and Oklahoma; just a week and a half ago, they fell at 7-24 Rhode Island -- but despite that, they are the the most consistently sound team in the A10.

The Billikens have plenty of talent, too. Brian Conklin recently made the first-team All-Conference squad, while Kwamain Mitchell earned third-team honors. Conklin and Kyle Cassity also made the All-Academic team, while Jordair Jett earned All-Defensive team honors.
