Rick Majerus Out As Saint Louis University Basketball Head Coach, Potentially For Good

After five seasons as head coach Rick Majerus finally brought the Saint Louis Billikens' once-sleepy basketball program back to March Madness glory in the 2012 NCAA Tournament, when they defeated Memphis 61-54 in the Round of 64. Any hopes of building on that success, at least for Majerus, were dashed Friday, when it came out that serious heart problems would keep Majerus from coaching in the 2012-2013 season. Jim Crews, formerly head coach at Army and the University of Evansville, was named interim head coach.

Majerus hasn't been removed at the Billikens' head coach entirely, but his contract was set to expire at the end of next season; at this stage, at least, it seems unlikely that he'll return. Since joining the program in 2007 Majerus has a 56-35 record; the Billikens job was his return to coaching after 15 years at the University of Utah, where he was 323-95. At Utah Majerus was also forced to take leaves of absence—and eventually leave for good—due to health issues.
