Jake Westbrook Injury: St. Louis Cardinals Starter Could Miss Season

St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Jake Westbrook may miss the rest of the season after a setback on Saturday with the oblique injury he suffered on Sept. 8 against the Milwaukee Brewers, according to MLB.com.

Westbrook only managed to get through 10 pitches of his scheduled bullpen session on Saturday before he stopped throwing and walked back to the clubhouse. Westbrook now doubts whether he'll be able to pitch again this season.

"It was just there," Westbrook said of the discomfort. "Knowing that I feel it then in the first 10 pitches, when I start getting after it, it's not going to be much better. It has slowly gotten worse each day. I was hoping I could bounce back. That's not the case."

Lance Lynn returned to the rotation in place of Westbrook. Lynn is 2-0 while only allowing one run since his return.

Westbrook's absence means that Lynn will start on Monday in the first of three games against the Houston Astros. Jaime Garcia and Chris Carpenter will pitch the final two games of the series.

Jake Westbrook Injury: Cardinals Pitcher Will Return Last Week Of Season, According To Report

St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Jake Westbrook will not return from an oblique injury until the final week of the season, according to Tim McKernan of InsideSTL.com. Westbrook was injured in the fifth inning of the Sept. 8 loss to the Milwaukee Brewers and it seems that the Cardinals will turn to Lance Lynn to start as his replacement in the meantime.

Westbrook is 13-11 on the season with a 3.97 ERA and a 1.39 WHIP and has been one of the top starting pitchers for the Cardinals this season.

Lynn is 15-7 so far this season and had a tremendous first half of the year but struggled after his hot start. He has spent time in the bullpen the last month. Lynn started for the Cardinals in Westbrook's spot on Thursday, going six innings and allowing just one run in the win.

The Cardinals face the Dodgers again tonight with Joe Kelly taking the mound against Chris Capuano, with first pitch set for 7:10 p.m. PT.
