Jason Kidd finalizing deal to become Nets coach, according to report

Jason Kidd is on the verge of being named the Brooklyn Nets' new head coach just weeks after announcing his retirement from the NBA, according to Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports.

More: Nets Daily reacts to the news

A formal announcement is expected soon and an introductory press conference could happen by the end of the week. A league source told Yahoo! that Kidd's contract will be for three years with a team option for a fourth.

Kidd is set to replace P.J. Carlesimo, who brought Brooklyn to the NBA Playoffs as the interim head coach. Kidd himself just made a playoff appearance as a player with the crosstown New York Knicks, but ended his playing career with a disastrous cold streak that contributed to the Knicks' second-round loss to the Indiana Pacers.

Despite having no coaching experience -- as a head coach or otherwise -- Kidd is familiar with the Nets' organization. He played for them in New Jersey from 2001-08 and was a star player on their 2002 and 2003 Eastern Conference Championship teams.

Pacers associate head coach Brian Shaw interviewed with Brooklyn on Wednesday, though it looks like he fell short of securing the job. Kidd is reportedly targeting Lawrence Frank and Tim Grgurich to join his staff. Frank coached Kidd and the Nets from 2003-10 and Grgurich has bounced around the league as an assistant.

NBA Draft 2013: Which programs have produced the most first-round picks?

The past decade has produced NBA All-Stars whose alma maters range from college bluebloods to one-time Cinderellas, but it seems like some colleges have NBA-ready talent year after year. Those schools, to the surprise of no one, are the ones causing mayhem on the road to the Final Four every March.

Since 2003, North Carolina has won two National Championships and been to three Final Fours. In that time, the Tar Heels have also produced 13 first-round draft picks -- more than any other school. Their run of draft-night success began in 2005 when Marvin Williams, Raymond Felton, Rashad McCants and Sean May were all picked early, ending a four-year drought of first-round selections from Chapel Hill. Felton, McCants and May were each McDonald's All-Americans in 2002, but it took until their junior seasons to deliver the school's first National Championship in 12 years.

With the John Calipari one-and-done model, the Kentucky Wildcats come in at No. 2, having produced 12 first-rounders since 2003. More impressively, the Wildcats had just one player (Rajon Rondo) taken in the first round between 2003 and 2009, meaning the last three drafts have been loaded with Wildcats. Kentucky also won a National Championship and went to two Final Fours those three years. Anthony Davis and John Wall, both former Wildcats, make up two of the last three No. 1 overall selections.

Connecticut and Kansas have each produced 11 first-round picks in the last decade. Neither school has seen a player go No. 1, but UConn has had a trio of top-three picks (Hasheem Thabeet, Emeka Okafor and Ben Gordon). The Huskies and Jayhawks have also been to a combined six Final Fours since 2003, and have won a combined three National Championships.

The best schools for producing first-round draft picks over the last decade can be seen below:

School

Michael Dixon commits to Memphis

Former Missouri guard Michael Dixon will transfer to the University of Memphis, according to ESPN.com.

Dixon told ESPN that he called Memphis coach Josh Pastner to inform him of his decision Wednesday evening. He will now need a waiver from the NCAA if he hopes to avoid sitting out a year.

Dixon averaged 13.5 points and 3.3 assists per game two seasons ago as he helped lead Missouri to a Big 12 championship. But his off-the-court problems soon proved to be too much, and coach Frank Haith dismissed him from the program in November. The guard had been accused of sexual assault twice in the span of less than three years.

"This is not how I want to be remembered," Dixon told ESPN. "I want another chance to prove myself."

Police declined to question Dixon after the second alleged incident because of the lack of sufficient evidence. Charges were never filed after the first alleged incident.

If he's cleared to play, Dixon can provide depth to an already talented Memphis backcourt. He'll look to play alongside Joe Jackson and can potentially fill the hole left by Adonis Thomas, who declared for the NBA Draft.

Dixon is expected to fly to Memphis and begin classes immediately on Thursday morning.

MLB Draft 2013 scouting report roundup: C Reese McGuire

Teams hoping for help behind the plate a few years down the road might look to the Pacific Northwest, where catcher Reese McGuire is finishing up at Kentwood (Wash.) High School. The state Gatorade Baseball Player of the Year hit .417 in his senior season with a slugging percentage of .778. More importantly, he's shown promise behind the plate, where ESPN calls him the best-throwing catcher in the entire draft. McGuire couples an impressive pop time with accuracy on his throws and can also block tough pitches in the dirt. SB Nation's Minor League Ball blog even says McGuire's defense alone is reason to draft him early on, though his lefty bat could also make him a significant home run threat in time.

Right now, it's probably not a matter of if McGuire gets picked in the first round, but when. If he chooses to go to college instead, he has committed to the University of San Diego.

Vital statistics

Matt Garrioch, MinorLeagueBall.com: "His swing would get him taken at the top of the draft no matter his position. He keeps his hands high and drives through the zone with a lightning quick bat. He is short and compact to the ball and generates a lot of power potential."

Keith Law, ESPN: "The best-throwing catcher in this draft class, McGuire has improved his receiving but still faces questions about his hit and power tools."

MLB Draft 2013 scouting report round-up: OF Clint Frazier

When you hit six home runs in the first seven games of your senior season, people tend to take notice. High schooler Clint Frazier did just that, and is trying to show that he can offer a ton of promise to a team picking in the top 10-15 of the first round. His numbers speak for themselves. He holds the Loganville (Ga.) High School records for runs scored in a season, RBI in a season and career, and home runs in a season. Oh, and he has nearly doubled the school's career home run mark, which was originally set by current Oakland Athletic Brandon Moss. SB Nation's blog Minor League Ball lauds Frazier as a five-tool player who has "a chance to be a star." Though he might eventually outgrow center field, he is in a position now where teams might jump to take him regardless of where he ends up playing in the field.

What they're saying

Matt Garrioch, Minor League Ball: "Everything you have read about gritty players can be said about Frazier. The difference is everything you've heard about 5 tool players can be said as well."

Nick Faleris, Baseball Prospectus: "Frazier has the best bat speed in the entire draft class and produces easy plus raw power in-game at the amateur level."

Dave Perkin, Sports Illustrated: "He has legitimate five-tool talent, possesses electric bat speed and is tremendously fast, which allows him to steal bases and be an outstanding defensive player. His closest major league comparison is probably Pirates star Andrew McCutchen."
MLB Draft 2013 scouting report round-up: 3B Colin Moran

Colin Moran has already excelled at the highest level outside of professional baseball, so it should be no surprise if his name is called early in the MLB Draft. He hit .357 and led the NCAA Tournament's No. 1 overall seed, the North Carolina Tar Heels, with 13 home runs in the 2013 regular season. He also scored 69 runs and knocked in 84 runs, both team bests. B.J. Surhoff's nephew appears to have a good eye and bat speed, which could make him a decent power hitter, according to ESPN's Keith Law. He can work the count and hit to all fields. At third, Moran's range isn't going to impress many scouts, but he can field the ball cleanly and make an accurate throw (again according to Law, so his defense might not be a liability. The All-American projects to be a top-10 pick and could even work his way into the top five.

What they're saying

Keith Law, ESPN: "Moran has a great eye and generates good bat speed, with solid extension through the zone for average power or a tick above. He takes a long stride forward in the box but keeps his weight back, also keeping his hands very deep, with good hip rotation as well."

Matt Garrioch, Minor League Ball: "He is one of the safer picks in the draft and I would have a hard time seeing him not reach the majors and be a useful major leaguer. While the ceiling isn't a future star, more of a solid regular, he I expect him to go off the board early."

Nick Faleris, Baseball Prospectus: "At his best, he is a tough out at the plate with a knack for squaring-up the ball and provides steady, if unspectacular, glove work at third."

MLB Draft 2013 scouting report round-up: RHP Mark Appel

For the second straight year, Mark Appel is hoping to be the first pick in the MLB Draft, but this time, the right-handed pitcher from Stanford doesn't have another year of eligibility to fall back on. Appel was picked eighth last year, elected to return to school, and emerged once again as a No. 1 possibility in 2013. Opponents hit just .203 off of Appel this year. He displayed elite-level command, striking out 130 batters and walking just 23 in 106 innings pitched. His fastball can reach the high 90s and usually stays around 94-95 mph, so he can blow batters away. Appel also throws a slider and changeup to keep hitters off balance, though he still needs to master the command of his secondary pitches. His tremendous upside makes him a virtual guarantee to be taken in the first two picks.

NBA Draft 2013: Cavs want 'established scoring forward' in exchange for No. 1 pick

The Cleveland Cavaliers are slated to pick first in this year's NBA Draft, but they might be willing to deal the selection. In return, they would be looking for "an established scoring forward," NBA executives told Sports Illustrated.

More Cavs Draft Coverage: Fear the Sword

The Cavaliers already have a young backcourt core with former No. 1 pick Kyrie Irving anchoring the point and fellow lottery selection Dion Waiters playing alongside him. They could, however, benefit from another big. Cleveland ranked 22nd in the league in rebounding and might need some help for Anderson Varejao and Tristan Thompson.

That help could come from Minnesota. Sources told SheridanHoops.com that if the Timberwolves are willing to part with Kevin Love, the No. 1 pick is theirs. Love has an opt-out clause for 2015, so if he isn't moved, Minnesota runs the risk of losing him for nothing in return.

SB Nation Cavs blog Fear the Sword also speculates that DeMarcus Cousins could find his way to Cleveland and the Kings could end up with the top pick. But with Cousins would come his off-the-court drama, and it is unclear whether the Cavaliers are willing to deal with that.

But if Cleveland does not choose to trade the top pick, it can pick up Kentucky big man Nerlens Noel. While he is still unpolished offensively and is coming off a torn ACL, he might develop into the interior presence that they need. Ben McLemore from Kansas is also a possibility and would provide some serious depth, giving the Cavaliers a young and imposing backcourt.
