NFL Transactions: St. Louis Rams Add Safety Michael Lewis

With their secondary struggling with injuries the St. Louis Rams added former San Francisco 49ers safety Michael Lewis Wednesday, looking to shore up a defense that needs immediate depth. Lewis, a Pro Bowl selection in 2004, started for the 49ers until rumored friction with Mike Singletary led him to ask for his release three games into the 2010 season.

Defensive tackle Clifton Ryan, suffering from migraines, was placed on injured reserve to open a spot for Lewis on the active roster.

In a career that began in 2002 Lewis, 30, has 12 interceptions and 10.5 sacks. Originally a second-round draft pick of the Philadelphia Eagles, Lewis was briefly benched by the Eagles and signed with the 49ers as a free agent following the 2006 season. Perhaps most impressively, he was the winner of the 2005 EA Sports Madden Bowl. So he’s got that going for him. The Post-Dispatch notes that Lewis is “yet another Rams defender who once played for coach Steve Spagnuolo”, in this case when Spagnuolo was defensive backs coach at Philadelphia.

St. Louis Rams wide receiver Danario Alexander, whose breakout performance in Week 6 came after he spent much of the first two months of the season rehabilitating after his most recent knee surgery, practiced Wednesday in what the official Rams Twitter called a “limited” role.

It goes on to say that Alexander, as well as special teams specialist Chris Chamberlain, who’s missed much of the season, and David Vobora, “participated quite a bit.” Both Chamberlain and Vobora are expected back in Week 7’s away game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

The Post-Dispatch is reporting that Alexander said his knee felt pretty good, which could be less than reassuring for fans who have unilaterally nominated him as savior of the Rams’ weak receiving corps.

Former Mizzou wide receiver Danario Alexander was added to the St. Louis Rams’ active roster, in the wake of Mark Clayton’s season-ending injury. Alexander, who joined the team as a free agent in the offseason, had been on their practice squad ever since.

Alexander, whose draft stock plummeted due to offseason knee surgery, adds a size element that’s sorely lacking among the Rams’ current receivers, but the Rams are likely not done searching for potential replacements for Clayton’s production.

This is all starting to look familiar to St. Louis Rams fans—Mark Clayton will miss the remainder of the 2010 NFL season after injuring his knee in the first quarter of the Rams’ blowout loss to the Detroit Lions.

The Rams lost Donnie Avery to a similar injury in the preseason, which led to their acquisition of Clayton. Clayton was leading the Rams in receiving yards with 300 at the time of the injury. The Post-Dispatch has an earlier report from the AP, in which Coach Steve Spagnuolo is quoted as saying “It doesn’t look good… we’re not optimistic.”

St. Louis Rams running back Steven Jackson practiced Friday, doing what the official Rams Twitter described as “”http://twitter.com/OneRamsWay/status/26100010929">limited work", but he remains a game-time decision as of Friday afternoon for week four’s tangle with the Seattle Seahawks.

Jackson suffered a groin strain in week three’s victory against the Washington Redskins. Through week three he’s had 51 carries for 214 rushing yards and one touchdown.

St. Louis Rams running back Steven Jackson missed his second straight practice Thursday, still suffering from a groin injury that knocked him out of the Rams’ week three victory against the Washington Redskins.

With starter Steven Jackson nursing a strained groin (but "walking around pretty cool") the St. Louis Rams made a small step toward adding depth at running back Tuesday, signing Chauncey Washington from the New York Jets’ Practice Squad.

Turf Show Times has some early analysis; VanRam thinks he could replace Keith Toston. Now 25 years old, Washington was a seventh round pick of the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2008 out of USC. Since then he’s bounced to the Dallas Cowboys and then the Jets.
