Albert Pujols makes history for the St. Louis Cardinals, hitting three home runs in consecutive at-bats in Game 3 of the 2011 World Series to help them take a 2-1 lead over the Texas Rangers. Pujols is the first to hit three home runs in a World Series game since Reggie Jackson in 1977.
The St. Louis Cardinals can crown their own Mr. October now—in the ninth inning, the Texas Rangers already down 15-7, Albert Pujols hit his third home run in as many at-bats off Darren Oliver, a long shot to left field that made him the first player since Reggie Jackson in 1977 to hit three home runs in a World Series game. You're going to want to see the video, because these are not cheap home runs: Check the Cardinals' video section for the footage.
Pujols hit a three-run shot in the sixth inning off Alexi Ogando; followed up with a two-run homer against Mike Gonzalez; and successfully hit a solo shot off the Rangers' other lefty specialist to cap the night, one of the most impressive performances in series history. He finishes with five hits and six RBI altogether.
Only Jackson and Babe Ruth, who did it twice, have ever done it before; Pujols is the first National Leaguer ever to manage the trick. The Cardinals won the game by a final score of 16-7, taking a 2-1 lead over the Rangers in the 2011 World Series, Pujols's third since joining the Cardinals in 2001.
