Zack Greinke Doesn't Like Chris Carpenter, Or Angelina Jolie

Stay connected for news and updates

Zack Greinke has long been my pick for the best interview in baseball, even before he bumped the NLCS ratings a few points by calling out Chris Carpenter Sunday—the guy doesn't think like most people, let alone most baseball players, and he's completely unfiltered when it comes time to show that. At first I just thought he'd never seen that scene in Bull Durham about giving the typical, worthless ballplayer interview—later I came to guess that he'd seen it, and then hadn't considered the irony for even a moment.

And now he doesn't like Chris Carpenter. Speaking as the voice of the Brewers—and saying things the Brewers probably had no desire to tell a reporter—he said that some players thought his famous attitude was phony, that the yelling and the staring-down was particularly unpopular. Later he came right out and said "I think no one really likes Carpenter."

All this is probably true, in spite of Greinke's infamous history—he says a lot of things, including the time he detailed his famous heartbreak when Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston broke up, but under the weirdness most of it appears to be true. And I'm fine with that. If Chris Carpenter played for the Brewers, we'd probably find him just as annoying—all the yelling and intensity might not be manufactured, but that doesn't make it any less difficult to sit through.

If you're the other guy, that is.
