St. Louis Cardinals Swept By Toronto Blue Jays In Interleague Matchup

The St. Louis Cardinals were swept by the Toronto Blue Jays Sunday night, losing their third game in the interleague matchup after Kyle McClellan joined Jaime Garcia in allowing one big inning. McClellan's four-run sixth ended his night, but it was Ricky Romero's dominance of the Cardinals offense that gave him the loss; Romero shut out the Cardinals on four hits while striking out five and walking two.

Two of the Cardinals' baserunners won't be joining the team for Tuesday's trip to Camden Yards and the Baltimore Orioles—rookies Andrew Brown, who doubled, and Pete Kozma, who walked in his only plate appearance, were sent back to AAA Memphis following the game to make room for the return of injured infielders David Freese and Nick Punto, the Cardinals' first veteran reinforcements in what seems like forever.

Fellow Memphis callup Raul Valdes, the 34-year-old Cuban defector, made his Cardinals debut Sunday, striking out two in an inning of work. With Trever Miller and Brian Tallet in prolonged slumps Valdes could extend his stay in the majors beyond Brown and Kozma's if he can continue to retire anybody at all.

St. Louis Cardinals Fall Again After Crucial Error Sinks Jaime Garcia

The St. Louis Cardinals lost their second in a row to the Toronto Blue Jays Saturday after Daniel Descalso's third-inning error allowed a three-run homer from Juan Rivera and pasted the last of four unearned runs on starter Jaime Garcia. The Blue Jays won by a final score of 6-4 behind Carlos Villanueva, who won his fifth game of the season. Colby Rasmus doubled and Ryan Theriot and Jon Jay had two hits for the Cardinals, who fell two games behind the Milwaukee Brewers and just four games over .500 after the loss.

The Cardinals got seven otherwise-efficient innings out of Garcia—who threw just 95 pitches over seven innings despite walking four batters—but they couldn't make up for that five-run third. Troubled ex-closer Ryan Franklin went two innings and allowed one more run to finish the game for the Cardinals, who have begun rebuilding their bullpen in a busy weekend of moves.

They'll get one more chance to top the Blue Jays on Sunday, when Ricky Romero and Kyle McClellan will meet at 1:15 for a Sunday matinee.

St. Louis Cardinals Lose First To Toronto Blue Jays, Fall Behind Brewers In Central

The St. Louis Cardinals couldn't complete a late-innings comeback Friday night, dropping their series-opener with the Toronto Blue Jays after Jose Bautista hit a ninth-inning home run, his 23rd bomb of the year, off rookie closer Fernando Salas. The Cardinals' beleaguered bullpen was forced into action early after Jake Westbrook, who continued his season-long struggles, couldn't make it out of the fifth inning; after Mitchell Boggs put out that fire rookie Lance Lynn pitched three solid innings in his first relief appearance, but Salas couldn't get around the Blue Jays' unlikely slugger and took his second loss of the season as the Cardinals fell by a final score of 5-4.

Colby Rasmus and Matt Holliday homered for the Cardinals, who took their 36th loss of the year and fell back to five games over .500. Brandon Morrow continued to pitch his way back after a spotty performance in May, striking out nine in seven innings and allowing three runs, although the win went to Jason Frasor.

Jaime Garcia and Carlos Villanueva will take the mound for game two of the series, scheduled for Saturday at 6:15.
