The St. Louis Cardinals took a 2-1 lead into the ninth inning on Monday night at Wrigley Field, but Joe Mather of the Chicago Cubs roped a two RBI single to center to score Bryan LaHair and Geovani Soto to give the Cubs the win.
St. Louis starter Jamie Garcia pitched well in the loss. The 25-year old lefty went 7.2 innings, allowing just one earned run on six hits and a walk while striking out four.
Chicago got on the board first when Alfonso Soriano drove in Darwin Barney on a sacrifice fly in the first inning. St. Louis did all its scoring in the fourth. Carlos Beltran tied the game 1-1 when Skip Schumaker scored on a ground out to the second baseman. Yadier Molina drove in the go-ahead run later in the inning when his sacrifice fly to center scored Matt Holliday.
Chicago improves to 5-12, while St. Louis drops to 11-6.
