A dominant performance from Zack Greinke proved to be enough to prevent the St. Louis Cardinals from pulling off a sweep against their Central Division rivals. Greinke allowed only one earned run in 6 innings to help lead the Brewers to a 3-2 victory in the series-finale.
Apart from a tough sixth inning, Jaime Garcia was actually very impressive on the mound in the loss. Garcia allowed three earned runs, all of which came in the sixth, in 7.0 innings pitched. Garcia struck out six batters, but it wasn't enough to avoid his first loss of the season.
Jonathan Lucroy drove in what proved to be the the game-winning run with two outs in the sixth inning, as his double scored both Aramis Ramirez and Corey Hart. This two-run double gave the Brewers a 3-1 lead, which proved to be enough for Greinke and the bullpen.

The red hot St. Louis Cardinals will be going for a sweep of the Milwaukee Brewers on Sunday, as well as their fifth win over the Brew Crew in six games in the young 2012 season. But to do so, they'll have to get past Milwaukee ace Zack Greinke, who has as good of a shot as anyone to ice a Cardinals line up that has scored 20 runs in the series' first two games.
The good news for the Cards is that they'll be countering with Jaime Garcia. The lefty has been pretty solid so far this season, posting an ERA under three despite a WHIP of 1.42 that is higher than you'd like to see. Garcia faced the Brewers in his first start of 2012, giving up two earned runs on five hits over six innings while striking out three and walking two.
Greinke is responsible for the Brewers' lone win over St. Louis this year, when he threw seven shutout innings on April 7.

The St. Louis Cardinals had the last laugh over the Milwaukee Brewers in last year's NLCS, and they've started 2012 off on the same foot. After taking two of three from the Brewers in the teams' first series of the season, the Cardinals roughed Milwaukee up by the score of 13-1 on Friday night.
The Brewers seemed to have the advantage on the hill, with Yovani Gallardo facing Jake Westbrook, but the Cardinals sent Gallardo packing in the third inning, while Westbrook continued his surprisingly stellar start to the season. Gallardo recorded only two official innings, but he pitched well into the third, facing six batters but retiring none. He gave up eight earned runs on eight hits in those two innings; he walked three batters and only struck out two. Westbrook meanwhile scattered seven hits across seven innings, giving up only one run, which was earned. As impressive was his five strikeouts in those seven innings which came with zero walks.
The Cardinals pounded out 15 hits as a team on the night, with Jon Jay and Matt Holliday each leading the way with three hits apiece. Jay tied Skip Schumaker with three runs batted in to pace St. Louis.
The series will continue tomorrow afternoon with Marco Estrada facing Kyle Lohse.

The Milwaukee Brewers entered Friday night's game vs. the St. Louis Cardinals with an advantage in the starting pitching match up— at least on paper. The Cardinals hitters had something to say about that, though, as they beat up on Brewers starter Yovani Gallardo early on Friday night, knocking him out after two innings after putting up eight runs, all of which were charged to Gallardo.
The Cardinals got on the board in the second inning on a Skip Schumaker triple which scored Yadier Molina and Matt Carpenter, but that was only a prelude to what would be an epic top of the third. In that third, the Cardinals collected seven hits to go along with two walks, all of which resulted in eight runs. The inning started with a Jon Jay single and a Matt Holliday walk. Carlos Beltran then singled to score Jay and David Freese singled to plate Holliday and put the Brewers up 4-1. Yadier Molina then walked, and Carpenter delivered the major blow with a double to center that brought home Beltran and Freese.
That Carpenter hit would be the end of Gallardo, but reliever Mike McClendon did little to stop the bleeding. With St. Louis up 6-1, Schumaker singled to score Molina, which was followed by a Jake Westbrook sacrifice and a Rafael Furcal walk. Jay, who started the inning, then singled again to score Carpenter and Schumaker. Holliday followed that up by singling home Furcal to make it 10-1. The inning came to its merciful end when Beltran lined into a double play.
In the bottom of the fifth, a Jay single scored Schumaker and a Holliday single plated Furcal. That made it 12-1, which is where the score now stands.

The St. Louis Cardinals and the Milwaukee Brewers start a weekend series on Friday at Busch Stadium. Follow this storystream for schedules, lineups, and score updates.
The St. Louis Cardinals lost Albert Pujols this offseason, while the Milwaukee Brewers lost Prince Fielder. The Brewers retained MVP Ryan Braun and two of the NL's true top flight starters, but in four games in 2012, the Redbirds have won three. Maybe more impressive is the run differential, which after the Cardinals' 13-1 win on Friday night, now tilts 33 to 15 in their favor.
Looking to keep the good fortune going will be Kyle Lohse, who has been more or less unbelievable this season, posting a 0.99 ERA in four starts while also posting an 8/1 K:BB ratio. He'll be opposed by Miguel Estrada, who has been called upon to plug a hole in the Brewers rotation. In his previous start this season, which came a week ago vs. the Colorado Rockies, Estrada struck out nine in five innings while only giving up two hits and an unearned run.
