Miami Marlins Fall In First Game At Marlins Park

The Miami Marlins' new park looks like a popular success so far, with even its most ridiculous elements—hello, Home Run Feature—impressing fans tired of Major League Baseball's omnipresent retro aesthetic, but Game 1 at the new park was a 4-1 loss. Kyle Lohse wiped out the new-look offense, relying on a lot of pitches in the strike zone and the ballpark's deep dimensions to carry a no-hitter through six innings. But hey—at least new shortstop Jose Reyes picked up the park's first Marlins hit.

I started out skeptical of the stadium's wild excesses, and I still think ballparks should never be financed by the public—they won't make the money back, and your politicians are just building giant monuments to themselves—but I'm won over by all the white-and-neon flourishes and the crazy architectural set-pieces. Any ballpark that can be photographed through a permanent aquarium filled with tropical fish—well, I'm perfectly fine with that.

If you aren't—well, I'm also perfectly fine with that.
