The St. Louis Cardinals rode quality pitching to a 5-3 victory over the Chicago White Sox on Thursday night at Busch Stadium. Other than a three-run homer by Adam Dunn in the top of the sixth inning, the Cardinals' pitching allowed little to nothing to happen when Chicago was up to bat.
Over six innings, Cardinal starter Jake Westbrook allowed three runs on five hits, but all of the runs came over a period in the sixth inning when he allowed two consecutive singles before Dunn's homer. The bullpen finished off the game with three innings of no-hit ball, though, walking two and striking out one during the final three frames.
The Cardinals got all their scoring done early, as they were up 5-0 by the end of the fifth inning. David Freese finished with a double, a homer and 3 RBI, plus Allen Craig had a couple of doubles, a walk and three runs scored. Westbrook, Yadier Molina and Daniel Descalso also got on base two times apiece.

The St. Louis Cardinals are leading 5-3 over the Chicago White Sox after six innings on Thursday night in the rubber match of a competitive three-game set at Busch Stadium.
Jake Westbrook was in the middle of a shutout before allowing a three-run homer to Adam Dunn in the sixth inning, which broke a scoreless streak that had stretched back to the first game of the series.
While Westbrook has only struck out one hitter, he's allowed just those three runs on five hits. Chicago's Gavin Floyd didn't fare nearly as well on the night, allowing five runs on eight hits and four walks over 4.2 innings.
David Freese leads the Cardinals with a double, a homer and 3 RBI, plus Allen Craig has a pair of doubles, a walk and three runs scored.

The victory improves the Cards to 32-31 on the season, while Chicago falls to 34-28.

The St. Louis Cardinals dropped back down to .500 after falling 6-1 in the series opener against the Chicago White Sox on Tuesday night at Busch Stadium. The win moves Chicago to 34-27, while St. Louis, which has now lost three of its last four games, falls to 31-31.
Chicago scored four runs in the top of the eighth inning to make a one-run game 6-1. Left fielder Adam Dunn and catcher A.J. Pierzynski would each hit home runs in the inning for the White Sox.
The Cards were mostly lifeless offensively, scoring their lone run in the sixth inning when first baseman Allen Craig singled to center to score Matt Holliday.
St. Louis starter Adam Wainwright allowed only five hits and two earned runs while striking out seven over seven innings, but the 30-year old righty goes down as the hard-luck loser. Wainwright's overall record falls to 5-7 with the loss.
