The St. Louis Cardinals had little trouble in a 14-2 beatdown of the Houston Astros on Thursday night. After the first two games of the three-game series were each decided by a single run, the Cardinals made Thursday's game a bit less competitive.
Adam Wainwright made a strong start for St. Louis, allowing just two runs on six hits over six innings while striking out 11 hitters. The Astros initially took a 2-0 lead through the first two innings, but things quickly unraveled from there for Houston.
The Cardinals offense got to Astros starter J.A. Happ in the third inning, and he was out of the game before the end of the fifth. The bullpen didn't fare much better, allowing ten runs in place of Happ.
David Freese had an absolutely huge game for St. Louis, hitting a grand slam in the seventh inning and two-run homer en route to six RBI on the night. The Cardinals also got two RBI apiece from Carlos Beltran, Rafael Furcal, Allen Craig and Shane Robinson.

The St. Louis Cardinals are leading 3-2 over the Houston Astros through four innings on Thursday night as Lance Lynn looks for his ninth win of the season. Coming off his shortest outing of the year, Lynn has looked better in Minute Maid Park on Thursday.
Through four innings, Lynn has allowed two runs on four hits, but he's also struck out seven of the 12 batters that he's retired. After allowing a solo home run to Jed Lowrie in the first inning and an RBI double to Chris Johnson in the second, Lynn has sent seven straight batters back to the dugout.
After trailing 2-0 early, the Cardinals' offense came to life in the third inning with a string of hits. Carlos Beltran, Allen Craig and Rafael Furcal each contributed one RBI apiece in the three-run third frame that allowed St. Louis to take the advantage.

The St. Louis Cardinals lost a key cog in their rotation on Thursday afternoon when it was announced that SP Jaime Garcia was headed to the 15-day DL with a shoulder strain in his throwing arm:
Jaime Garcia placed on the 15-day DL retroactive to June 6 (left shoulder strain). Fernando Salas recalled from AAA; joins team in Houston.

The 25-year-old Garcia has 11 starts through the early part of the 2012 MLB season and currently sports a 4.48 ERA despite a strong 2.74 FIP. The Cardinals called on Garcia for 32 starts in 2011, and he complete 194 and 2/3 innings with a 3.56 ERA and 3.23 FIP.

The St. Louis Cardinals (29-28) still haven't dropped below .500 in the 2012 season, and with their win on Wednesday the Cards are safe for another two days at least, so de facto staff ace Lance Lynn (8-2, 2.63 ERA) can focus on claiming a series win against the Houston Astros on Thursday. J.A. Happ (4-5, 4.31 ERA) will take the mound for the Astros, who still boast a very respectable 18-13 record at Minute Maid Park. As for the Cardinals, they are just 3-6 on their road trip going into the finale of their 10-game road excursion.

The St. Louis Cardinals knocked off the Houston Astros 4-3 at Minute Maid Park on Wednesday. The win gets St. Louis back over .500, pushing the team's record to 29-28. Houston falls to 24-32 with the loss.
St. Louis led wire-to-wire. The Cards scored three runs before Houston ever got a chance to bat, an inning ignited by a solo home run from the game's second batter, St. Louis second baseman Daniel Descalso. Left fielder Allen Craig and third baseman David Freese would also add RBIs before the first ended.
Following a third inning solo homer from Craig, the Astros ran off three straight runs but couldn't tie the score.
Starter Adam Wainwright earned the win, improving to 5-6 by allowing seven hits and three runs over 5.2 innings. Jason Motte nailed down the save, his 10th of the year.

The St. Louis Cardinals are giving left fielder Matt Holliday a routine day of rest as they face the Houston Astros on Wednesday night. Holliday didn't have a great start to the month, so the team is hoping that some added rest will help to get him back on track like the rest of the team.
Yadier Molina is back in the lineup for St. Louis on Wednesday after he got a day off himself.

After a tough loss on Tuesday, the St. Louis Cardinals once again face up against the Houston Astros on Wednesday night in a battle of NL Central teams. Having lost six of their past seven games, the Cardinals are hoping that Adam Wainwright can help to get the team back on track.
Returning from Tommy John surgery, consistency has been an obvious issue for Wainwright in the early part of the 2012 campaign. In his most recent start on June 1, he allowed seven runs over 6.1 innings against the Mets, but his preceding two starts consisted of 15 innings of one-run ball, including a shutout of the Padres.
At one point, the Cardinals were sitting pretty with a 20-11 record, but things have fallen apart since then. Over their past 25 games, St. Louis has posted a brutal 8-17 record, dropping into third place in the division.

If the 2012 MLB All-Star Game was held today, the St. Louis Cardinals would have two players in the starting lineup: catcher Yadier Molina and right fielder Carlos Beltran. The defending World Series champions have struggled since getting off to a 20-11 start, but St. Louis' influence is still found all over the first balloting update for the All-Star Game, which was released on Tuesday.
Here's a look at the balloting in the National League at catcher and in the outfield:
CATCHERS
Yadier Molina, Cardinals: 1,100,048
Buster Posey, Giants: 1,072,464
Brian McCann, Braves: 707,508
Carlos Ruiz, Phillies: 562,021
Jonathan Lucroy, Brewers: 457,590OUTFIELDERS
Matt Kemp, Dodgers: 1,952,910
Carlos Beltran, Cardinals: 1,212,030
Ryan Braun, Brewers: 1,112,971
Andre Ethier, Dodgers: 827,262
Melky Cabrera, Giants: 714,642
The Cards also have three players currently in second place. Shortstop Rafael Furcal trails Troy Tulowitzki of the Rockies by 20,000 votes, Davis Freese tails the Mets' David Wright by 32,000 votes and Lance Berkman trails the Reds' Joey Votto by 68,000 votes.

The experts all tried to convince us that the 2012 MLB Draft had no frontrunner, and after two days of draft results they appear to have been right: The Houston Astros, in their first draft under former St. Louis Cardinals farm czar Jeff Luhnow, took Carlos Correa with the No. 1 overall pick, eschewing both Byron Buxton, who went No. 2, and Mark Appel, who slipped all the way to No. 8 due to signability issues. Luhnow, widely regarded as the key figure in the Cardinals' transformation of their once-dormant farm system, surprised even those wary experts by selecting the the high-upside shortstop; the No. 1 pick was, by draft day widely assumed to come down to Buxton and Appel.
We scouted him at Viva El Birdos back in February; since then his draft stock had only gone up, but few expected him to be the Astros' new top prospect on this side of MLB Draft day. A huge power-threat who could stick at shortstop, Correa definitely has the potential to be this draft's best pick, but it'll take a while for him to realize it. Luhnow appears to be confident about his job prospects in the medium-term, if nothing else.

The St. Louis Cardinals scored four runs in the ninth inning to forge a valiant comeback, but it wasn't enough as St. Louis lost to the Houston Astros 9-8 on Tuesday night. The Cards fall to .500, 28-28, with the loss, while Houston moves to 24-31.
Cards starter Jamie Garcia was chased after just two innings after allowing five hits and six earned runs. The St. Louis bullpen would only allow two earned runs over the rest of the night, but it wasn't good enough.
The Astros ran out to a 6-0 lead after two innings, highlighted by a two-run homer from center fielder Justin Maxwell.
Leadoff hitter Jose Altuve finished 4-for-5 with three runs in the win for Houston.
Matt Adams and Rafael Furcal each homered in the loss for St. Louis.
