Rockies Vs. Cardinals Final Score: St. Louis Wins 6-2

The St. Louis Cardinals rode strong pitching to a 6-2 victory over the Colorado Rockies on Thursday night. The Cardinals are now five games over .500 on the season after taking three out of four from the Rockies at Busch Stadium this week.

Lance Lynn was superb for St. Louis in his final start before this year's All Star Game, in which he'll be making his first career appearance. Lynn pitched six shutout innings on Thursday, striking out seven hitters while allowing just four hits and two walks.

The Cardinals only had seven hits on the day, but they made them count in piling six runs on the Rockies. Carlos Beltran and Matt Holliday each had two RBI apiece, plus Matt Carpenter got on base successfully in each of his three plate appearances. Jon Jay also played well, going 1-for-2 with a single, a walk, a run scored and an RBI.

Rockies Vs. Cardinals: Lance Lynn Takes The Ball On Thursday

The St. Louis Cardinals jumped out to a great start in 2012 thanks to impressive pitching from 25-year-old starter Lance Lynn, but in the recent weeks his magic has seemed to wear off a bit. Lynn has given up 17 earned runs and a whopping 25 hits over his last three starts (15.1 total innings) as his ERA has swelled to 3.62 for the season. The Colorado Rockies may be just what the doctor ordered for Lynn, however. Colorado suffered through a terrible month of June and now the team is tied with the Cubs for the worst record in Major League Baseball (31-50). They still rank well into the top-half of the league in most hitting statistics, but the pitching has been downright awful. The Rockies rank-dead last in ERA, Quality Starts, WHIP and Batting Average Against in 2012. Christian Friedrich (4-5, 5.52 ERA) has the task of trying to turn that tide on Thursday night.

Rockies Vs. Cardinals Final Score: Adam Wainwright Rebounds With Stellar Effort To Lead St. Louis To Victory

After getting roughed up against the Pittsburgh Pirates in his last start, Adam Wainwright of the St. Louis Cardinals was able to find the strike zone and dominate the lowly Colorado Rockies during a 4-1 Cards victory on Wednesday.

Wainwright struck out seven of six innings, allowing eight hits and one run, to improve to 7-8 on the season. Jason Motte came in to nail down his 18th save of the season to secure the victory. The win moves St. Louis to 43-39, while Colorado falls to 31-50.

The Cardinals scored one in the first inning, one in the second and two in the eighth. Third baseman David Freese delivered the biggest blow, a two RBI single to center in the eighth that could have scored a third run but catcher Yadier Molina was thrown out at the plate.

Cardinals Vs. Rockies Preview: Wainwright Looks To Steady Ship

Adam Wainwright has had plenty of outings in the last two months where he looked like the Cy Young contender of old. But he's been unable to go on a sustained run of starts without at some point imploding. On May 12, he gave up five earned runs in 4.1 innings to the Atlanta Braves. On June 1, he gave up seven earned runs in 6.1 innings to the New York Mets. On June 29, his most recent start, he gave up seven earned runs in five innings to the Pittsburgh Pirates. If the trend holds serve, Wainwright will dazzle the Colorado Rockies on Wednesday night, but that, of course, remains to be seen.

The Rockies, meanwhile, will be countering with Jeremy Guthrie, the offseason acquisition who has had a rough go of it in his first year in Denver. Guthrie spent most of June as a sort of swingman in Jim Tracy's revamped rotation, throwing three or four innings in the middle of the game after the starting pitcher hit his 75-pitch limit. But today he'll begin the game on the mound for the first time since June 17.

St. Louis starter Joe Kelly fell to 1-1 after allowing five hits, three runs (two earned) and four walks over six innings.

Rockies Vs. Cardinals: St. Louis Hopes To Stop Jeff Francis' Momentum

The St. Louis Cardinals crushed Colorado Rockies pitching in the series opener on Monday night en route to a breezy 9-3 victory, but things will likely be tougher on the offense on Tuesday night. Rockies starter Jeff Francis is 1-1 with a 5.47 ERA in 2012, but his last three starts have been quite impressive. Over 16.0 innings during that stretch, Francis has allowed just three earned runs while striking out nine batters and walking just one. Colorado won all three of those contests as well.

St. Louis will send starter Joe Kelly (1-0, 3.38 ERA) to the mound to duel with Francis on Tuesday.

Cardinals Sign 16-Year-Old C Joshua Lopez Out Of Venezuela

Ben Badler of Baseball America is reporting the St. Louis Cardinals have come to terms with C Joshua Lopez ahead of the deadline for international signings:

The MLB's latest collective bargaining agreement has imposed strict rules on the signing of international free agents, which should greatly curtail what teams can spend on foreign prospects. As such, many teams are scrambling to sign international talent before the new rules come into effect.

Lopez signs with the Cardinals ahead of that deadline, and though the young, 5-foot-9, 190-pound backstop is still many years away from joining the MLB squad, he has at least guaranteed himself a shot in the minor leagues.
