Cardinals Vs. Rockies Final Score: St. Louis Loses 8-2

The St. Louis Cardinals lost 8-2 to the Colorado Rockies on Thursday night as the club's bats fell silent following a pair of spectacular games to begin the series. After pounding Rockies pitching to the tune of 20 runs over the first two games, Colorado tightened things up in the series finale to avoid a sweep at Coors Field.

Cardinals starter Lance Lynn pitched well on Thursday, allowing just two runs over six innings, but the bullpen couldn't sustain that success. After Lynn left the game, St. Louis needed three different pitchers to get through the final two innings as the Rockies took a 2-2 tie and turned it into a 8-2 beatdown.

Beyond Jon Jay, who smacked a single and a triple to power the Cardinals offense, St. Louis managed to knock just three other hits. With just five total hits and one walk during the entire game, it's not surprising that the Cardinals could muster just two runs over nine innings.

Despite the loss, the Cardinals are now 9-4 since June 20.

Cardinals Vs. Rockies Preview: St. Louis Eyes Series Sweep On Thursday

The St. Louis Cardinals did not make any blockbuster deals prior to the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline, but they have still quietly put together a strong stretch of baseball over the past few weeks. With the starting pitching finding stability, the Cardinals have won seven of their last 10 games, including two straight victories over the Colorado Rockies. That means St. Louis can earn a series sweep against the Rockies if they take the finale on Thursday night.

Lance Lynn (13-4, 3.42 ERA) will take the mound for St. Louis, and he will start opposite Rockies hurler Alex White (2-6, 6.45 ERA).

Game date/time: Thursday, August 2, 7:40 p.m. CT

Location: Coors Field, Denver, Colo.

Cardinals Vs. Rockies Final Score: St. Louis Wins 9-6 Behind Two Homers From Matt Holliday

The rain lengthened things a bit, the St. Louis Cardinals were still able to outlast the Colorado Rockies 9-6 on Wednesday night at Coors Field. The win moves St. Louis to 56-48 on the season, while the Rockies fall to 37-65.

The Rockies led 5-3 after scoring four runs in the sixth, a frame highlighted by an RBI triple from Tyler Colvin. St. Louis would respond by scoring three in the seventh inning, one in the eighth and two in the ninth to complete the comeback victory.

Matt Holliday finished 3-for-4 with two homers, three runs and five RBI. Catcher Yadier Molina also added three hits and an RBI. Carlos Beltran went 2-for-5 in the win for St. Louis.

Cardinals starter Jake Westbrook improved to 10-8 by allowing nine hits and five earned runs over six innings.

Cardinals Vs. Rockies Lineups: St. Louis Sends Out Standard Lineup, Plus Tyler Greene

The St. Louis Cardinals are sending out the same lineup vs. the Colorado Rockies on Wednesday night that they did on Tuesday, with one exception. Fan non-favorite Tyler Greene gets the start at second over Skip Schumaker with Rockies lefty Drew Pomeranz on the mound.

In last night's game, St. Louis' two-through-six hitters were responsible for 11 hits, and if they're able to replicate that, it won't matter much who is playing second base.

Cardinals

  1. Daniel Descalso, SS
  2. Allen Craig, 1B
  3. Matt Holliday, LF
  4. Carlos Beltran, RF
  5. David Freese, 3B
  6. Yadier Molina, C
  7. Jon Jay, CF
  8. Tyler Greene, 2B
  9. Jake Westbrook, P

Rockies

  4. Andrew Brown, RF
  5. Jordan Pacheco, 3B
  6. Tyler Colvin, 1B
  7. Ramon Hernandez, C

MLB Prospect Rankings: Cardinals Land 4 In Kevin Goldstein's Top 50

The St. Louis Cardinals were uncharacteristically quiet during this year's trade deadline, making only one move to acquire right handed middle reliever Edward Mujica from the Miami Marlins. Maybe part of the reason why is that the team has confidence in its top prospects, a few of which may be close to the majors.

In his midseason prospect rankings from Wednesday, Baseball Prospectus' Kevin Goldstein placed four Cardinals farmhands in his top 50:

The Cardinals have reportedly considered calling Taveras up to boost their bench, but the team may also think of using someone like Martinez as a high-impact, high-leverage reliever down the stretch if things break a certain way.

There is also one gray cloud that looms over these placements: while Taveras and Adams moved up significantly from where they were ranked preseason, both Miller and Martinez dropped.

Cardinals Vs. Rockies Preview: Cards Look To Keep Pace In Central

The St. Louis Cardinals still have a bit of an uphill climb towards the playoffs, and they can make things easier on themselves by beating up on lowly teams like the Colorado Rockies, who have the second worst record in the National League. St. Louis got off to a good start on Tuesday, beating the Rockies 11-6, and they'll try and keep that momentum going on Wednesday.

They'll be led by starter Jake Westbrook, who hopes his ground ball tendencies will serve him well in the thin air of Coors Field. Westbrook has only made one career start in Denver, giving up three earned runs in six innings. Opposing him will be Rockies starter Drew Pomeranz who has had an up-and-down season so far this year, posting a 4.99 ERA in 10 starts.

Rockies Vs. Cardinals Final Score: St. Louis' Offense Goes Off In 11-6 Victory

The St. Louis Cardinals hit three home runs and received another solid pitching effort from Kyle Lohse during an 11-6 victory over the Colorado Rockies on Tuesday night at Coors Field. The win moves the Cards to 55-48, while the Rockies fall to 37-64.

St. Louis scored four in the first inning on a two RBI double from Matt Holliday and a two-run homer from Carlos Beltran, his 24th of the season. Holliday would add his 19th homer of the year in the seventh inning, which was followed two batters later by David Freese's 15th bomb of the season. First baseman Allen Craig finished 3-for-3 with three RBI and two runs in the victory.

Lohse improved to 11-2 on the season by allowing nine hits and five earned run over six innings.
