Cardinals Sign Three Amateurs For Combined $1.25 Million

The St. Louis Cardinals have signed a trio of amateur teenage prospects out of Latin America for a total of $1.25 million, as Ben Badler of Baseball America reports. This is the first year that MLB's new collective bargaining agreement has placed strict rules on amateur talent spending, so bonuses are smaller than we would've seen in the past.

Here are the three players and their bonuses:

  • Joshua Lopez, catcher: $475,000
  • Edmundo Sosa, shortstop: $425,000
  • Luis Bandes, outfielder: $350,000
  • Some of the Cardinals' best prospects, including outfielder Oscar Tavares and pitcher Carlos Martinez, were initially signed out of Latin America as amateur teenagers. Here's to hoping that Lopez, Sosa and Bandes can develop as well as those two prospects have thus far in their respective careers.

Cardinals Sign 16-Year-Old C Joshua Lopez Out Of Venezuela

Ben Badler of Baseball America is reporting the St. Louis Cardinals have come to terms with C Joshua Lopez ahead of the deadline for international signings:

The MLB's latest collective bargaining agreement has imposed strict rules on the signing of international free agents, which should greatly curtail what teams can spend on foreign prospects. As such, many teams are scrambling to sign international talent before the new rules come into effect.

Lopez signs with the Cardinals ahead of that deadline, and though the young, 5-foot-9, 190-pound backstop is still many years away from joining the MLB squad, he has at least guaranteed himself a shot in the minor leagues.
