The St. Louis Cardinals begin a crucial series against the San Diego Padres on Monday, as they strive to hold on to their position in the National League Wild Card race. The Cardinals currently have just a 1.5-game lead on the L.A. Dodgers.

The Cardinals now know they will be without Lance Berkman for the rest of the season after the slugger received news he needs yet another surgery on his right knee.
