Week 16 NFL Power Rankings: Is A Hard Fought Loss Better Than A Blowout Loss?

The St. Louis Rams (2-11) couldn't stop the bleeding on Sunday, losing their fifth straight game, but they did get a spark from Kellen Clemens in their loss to the Bengals. Did it mean anything?

NFL Power Rankings Week 16: FOXSports Keeps Rams In Cellar, Vaults 49ers To No. 4

The latest NFL Power Rankings continue to filter in as Week 16 approaches. The most recent offering from FOXSports' Brian Billick have the St. Louis Rams looking as miserable as ever:

31. Rams, 2-12: They hung with the Bengals longer than I thought, but this just isn't a very talented team.

After the Indianapolis Colts (1-13) managed to win last Sunday, the Rams sit precariously close to the bottom of pretty much every Power Rankings list -- though such a position also comes with a top draft pick.

Meanwhile, the Rams' division rival the San Francisco 49ers (11-3) have propelled themselves to No. 4 on Billick's Power Rankings following their surprise Monday Night Football victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers (10-4, ranked No. 6). The 49ers, who are the only NFC West team above .500 in 2011, have bulldozed their way into the franchise's first playoff birth since Jeff Garcia was under center.

NFL Power Rankings Week 16: ESPN Panel Keeps Rams Locked In At No. 31, Moves 49ers To No. 3

Experts from around the web are reacting to what took place during Week 15 in the NFL, and the five-man ESPN panel has fallen in line with every other site by keeping the St. Louis Rams at No. 31 overall. The team has been the lowest ranked team in the NFC for weeks now, and after the last-place Indianapolis Colts earned their first win in Week 15 only one game separates the Rams from the distinction of worst team in the NFL. Not the same intrigue a playoff push brings, but for those interested in the NFL Draft it is certainly something to watch. Here is what Mike Sando offered to explain the Rams' ranking:

31. St. Louis Rams (2-12, LW: 31) Kellen Clemens posted the Rams' highest single-game NFL passer rating of the season Sunday. (Sando)

The rest of the NFC West breaks down like this: the San Francisco 49ers jumped up three spots to No. 3 after their impressive Monday Night win over the Pittsburgh Steelers, while the Seattle Seahawks rose five spots to No. 15 and the Arizona Cardinals slid up two slots to No. 17.

Week 16 NFL Power Rankings: CBS Sports Leaves Rams At No. 31, Vaults 49ers To No. 4

SB Nation St. Louis has been collecting NFL Power Rankings from around the web for Week 16, and Pete Prisco of CBS Sports is next up. It seems he is fairly confused about whether to move the St. Louis Rams below the Indianapolis Colts for the first time this season, because he left the Rams at No. 31 but still had this rather discordant blurb to add:

31. St. Louis Rams (2-12, LW: 31) They've been so bad the past month, I had to move them down below the Colts. It would be hard to imagine Steve Spagnuolo coming back.

As for the rest of the NFC West, the San Francsisco 49ers moved up three spots to No. 7, the Seattle Seahawks remained at No. 18 and the Arizona Cardinals jumped up two spots to No. 18 overall.
