2011 NFL Mock Draft: The Pre-Draft Visit Smokescreen

2011 NFL Mock Draft bracketologists would do well to read TST's latest on the "gamesmanship" associated with pre-draft visits, which, in the 2010 NFL Draft season, didn't produce a single future St. Louis Ram, when it all came down to it. The Rams, as VanRam notes, went through the motions with a number of possible top picks, including Ndamukong Suh and Jimmy Clausen, and obviously ended up taking Sam Bradford anyway.

All that visiting is difficult to differentiate into actual interest, which limits the value of these pre-draft visits as actual tea-leaves, but TST concedes that it might be possible to divine a team's idea of its own needs when, for instance, two tight ends came down to Rams Park from among the 30 private visits teams are allowed. The Rams ended up drafting two tight ends that year—Michael Hoomanawanui and Fendi Onobun—just not the ones they had over for a visit.

My latest plan, with this bit of knowledge in mind: The Rams invite every plausible Top 20 player in for a private workout—except Julio Jones. This is like trying to force a cat to land on its back.
