NFL Supplemental Draft 2011: "There Is No Suspension" For Michael Floyd At Notre Dame

It’s difficult to get more unequivocal about Michael Floyd spurning the 2011 NFL Supplemental Draft in favor of a return to Notre Dame than coach Brian Floyd did for IrishCentral Thursday, saying, “there is no suspension, there is no sit for one game” in their plan for Floyd, and that if he avoids any additional mistakes like the DUI that nearly cost him the final year of his college career he’s expected to play in every game of the Fighting Irish’s 2011 season. Before he didn’t declare, Floyd was considered a first round pick in the 2011 NFL Draft, often mocked to the St. Louis Rams.

After the DUI and his indefinitely short suspension from Notre Dame, a trip to the NFL Supplemental Draft seemed likely. But as the supplemental draft returns to the news with Terrelle Pryor’s determination to participate in it, it’s clear Floyd will be able to return to college for his last year, as he originally anticipated.

NFL Supplemental Draft 2011: Michael Floyd Could Return To Notre Dame

Notre Dame receiver Michael Floyd, once the apple of the St. Louis Rams' 2011 NFL Draft eye and most recently a candidate for the NFL Supplemental Draft following an indefinite suspension that stems from his March DUI, could return to Notre Dame for his senior season as planned in 2011, if head coach Brian Kelly has anything to do with it. Floyd was pegged as a potential top pick in the 2011 supplemental draft, which looks to proceed despite the NFL lockout after Terrelle Pryor declared he'd enter it on Tuesday.

Floyd was seen as a possible fit in the supplemental draft, in which teams bid future draft picks for the rights to players who aren't eligible for the NFL Draft, immediately following the DUI, but he's never quite made a move in that direction. Now it may turn out that his indefinite suspension won't have involved actual suspension at all, leaving some doubt as to whether the punishment will end up fitting the time.

In any case, the St. Louis Rams appear to have moved on themselves, selecting Austin Pettis and Greg Salas in the 2011 NFL Draft after missing out on the Julio Jones sweepstake and the sudden paucity of first-round caliber receivers.
