Rams vs. Cardinals: Ryan Lindley's deep ball is an open challenge to Cortland Finnegan

Kevin C. Cox

The Arizona Cardinals are giving rookie Ryan Lindley his first career start against the St. Louis Rams on Sunday. Now's the time for Cortland Finnegan and Janoris Jenkins to wake up.

After three months of low-key quarterback controversy between two guys who didn't look very much like NFL starters, the Arizona Cardinals have finally chosen... a third guy, rookie Ryan Lindley. A sixth-rounder out of San Diego State, Turf Show Times's thorough scouting report suggests Lindley is being groomed for long bombs and hand-offs, and little in between. Lindley has the arm, but against most teams he doesn't have the accuracy. Which is to say that the Cardinals are all but challenging Cortland Finnegan, Janoris Jenkins, and the rest of the Rams' dormant secondary to pick the ball off against a rookie set to play his second career NFL game.

It's a challenge this team has found itself almost shockingly unable to meet since it last won against these same Cardinals in October. Since then the Rams have gone an incredible five games without forcing a turnover, the longest NFL streak in more than 50 years. After picking off eight passes, their new-look secondary has been victimized by great quarterbacks like Aaron Rodgers and Tom Brady and not-great quarterbacks like Mark Sanchez.

And now they've got Ryan Lindley. A month-and-a-half ago that would have looked like a plum assignment; now it looks like one team on the ropes daring another team on the ropes to stumble forward and land one solid punch, already. We'll see if it actually happens.
