Rams lead 49ers by 2 scores after 3 quarters

The St. Louis Rams have extended their lead over the San Francisco 49ers to 17-7 after three quarters of play at Candlestick Park in San Francisco, Calif.

The Rams tacked on three points after their drive was extended late in the quarter when 49ers defensive end Ray McDonald was flagged for a helmet-to-helmet hit on St. Louis quarterback Sam Bradford. San Francisco held the Rams from scoring on three straight plays inside the 49ers' 10-yard line, forcing St. Louis to settle for a 27-yard field goal from Greg Zuerlein.

The 49ers struggled on offense with backup quarterback Colin Kaepernick under center. The second-year pro out of Nevada has completed just 2 of 7 passes for 14 yards in relief of Alex Smith, who left the game with a concussion in the second quarter.

Bradford is 12 for 20 with 149 yards and a touchdown, while running back Steven Jackson has carried the ball 20 times for 71 yards and a score.

Michael Crabtree puts Rams on the board

Michael Crabtree picked up his fourth touchdown of the season early in the second quarter, putting the San Francisco 49ers on the board vs. the St. Louis Rams after Sam Bradford and company got off to a 14-point first-quarter run. Crabtree, who has four receptions for 58 yards and the touchdown, carried Alex Smith and company on their first successful drive of the evening, scoring and—as the announcers made clear, over and over—making this his fifth consecutive game against the Rams with a touchdown.

It was a crucial touchdown for the 49ers, who found themselves down 14-0 to a shockingly efficient Rams offense in the first quarter. They were unable to get on the board again before halftime, but with Colin Kaepernick in the game after Alex Smith's concussion, those first seven points could be the difference between an insurmountable deficit and the chance to turn the tables in the third quarter.

Crabtree's four touchdowns match, already, his total from the 2011 season; his career high is six, which he picked up of 44 receptions in 2010. If Kaepernick is going to get the 49ers back into this game, he'll need Michael Crabtree to do it.

Rams lead 49ers at halftime, 14-7

The St. Louis Rams hold a 14-7 halftime lead over the San Francisco 49ers at Candlestick Park in San Francisco, Calif. Jonathan Quick and Steven Jackson found the end zone for the Rams in the first half.

Early in the first quarter, Quick was the recipient of a 36-yard touchdown pass from Sam Bradford to cap a six-play, 66-yard drive. Eight minutes later, Jackson's 7-yard scoring run gave the Rams a two-score lead.

San Francisco answered with a touchdown at the 8:18 mark in the second quarter on Alex Smith's 14-yard pass to Michael Crabtree. Smith left the game following the scoring drive with a concussion that was apparently sustained on a hit by Vaughn Dunbar earlier in the possession. He was 7 for 8 for 72 yards and a touchdown upon exiting.

The Rams were faced with the task of having to punt from their own end zone shortly before halftime, which would have given the 49ers an opportunity to put more points on the board. However, the Rams instead succeeded on an attempted fake punt, moving the ball to the St. Louis 31-yard line.

Bradford completed 6-of-10 passes for 89 yards and a touchdown in the half, while Jackson carried the ball 12 times for 56 yards and a score.

Rams up 2 touchdowns on 49ers after 1st quarter

The St. Louis Rams hold a 14-0 lead over the San Francisco 49ers after the opening quarter of play in Sunday's game at Candlestick Park in San Francisco, Calif.

Rams quarterback Sam Bradford completed all four of his pass attempts for 73 yards, including a 36-yard scoring strike to Jonathan Quick to get St. Louis on the board. Running back Steven Jackson, who has rushed eight times for 44 yards, put the Rams up by two scores with a 7-yard touchdown run with less than two minutes remaining in the quarter.

The Rams outgained the 49ers in the first quarter, 149 total yards to 53, and picked up nine first downs to the Niners' four. The St. Louis defense sacked San Francisco quarterback Alex Smith once in the quarter, and held him to just 22 yards passing.

The 49ers currently face a fourth-and-1 at the Rams' 47-yard line early in the second quarter.
