Lindbergh Reference or ABA Reference?

Well, that was fast: A few days after Turf Show Times suggested the St. Louis Rams might franchise Brandon Lloyd, offering a center to the emerging discussions about the Rams' free agent plans, Jason LaCanfora threw a big not-so-fast on the whole idea. Now: More wild NFL rumors, at least until they coalesce around some particular target, or we know more about the Rams' plans for the number two pick in the 2012 NFL Draft. So, uh, how about Reggie Wayne?
Talk about Wayne has been surprisingly muted so far, even though last year he had the chance to disprove, once and for all, the idea that he was a Peyton Manning creation—despite having the likes of Curtis Painter and Dan Orlovsky throwing to him, he still snared 75 passes for 960 yards and four touchdowns.
He's not a show-stopping first option, and he's not likely to be around for the Rams' next great football team. But if the goal is to give Sam Bradford room to grow and this franchise room to escape from the hole in which its buried itself, a short-term acquisition like Wayne makes a lot of sense, while leaving enough resources to build a long-term scaffolding around Bradford and company.
