2012 NFL Draft: Rams, Redskins To Submit Blockbuster Trade For NFL Approval On Tuesday

The St. Louis Rams and Washington Redskins have reached an agreement in principle for a blockbuster trade that will send shock waves through the 2012 NFL Draft and could alter the future trajectory of both franchises, but the deal cannot become official until Tuesday, March 13 (the first day of the new year for the NFL). The teams released this joint statement about finalizing the process on Saturday morning:

"In order to execute each of our club's plans for free agency and the upcoming draft, we have agreed to a trade between our two teams for the 2nd pick in the 2012 draft. We will submit this trade to the NFL for approval."

In the trade, the Redskins will give up their No. 6 overall pick, two future first-round picks and a second-round pick in exchange for the Rams' No. 2 overall pick -- which means the de facto rights to Baylor quarterback Robert Griffin III, who had a tremendous NFL Combine and is generally rated the second-best quarterback prospect in the 2012 NFL Draft behind Stanford's Andrew Luck.

Rams fans are ecstatic about the potential trade over at SB Nation's Rams blog, Turf Show Times. After a disappointing 2-14 season, the team could quickly reload their talent with additional premium picks over the next few seasons. In a poll on Turf Show Times, 90 percent of fans think the trade is an excellent move for the franchise.
