NFL Free Agents: James Hall Could Be Someone Else's Reclamation Project

The St. Louis Rams cut James Hall Monday after four years, leaving a player who picked up 10.5 sacks in 2010 on the NFL free agent market in 2012. 35 years old, in 2011 Hall had more or less the same season he'd had in 2008 and 2009—and with the Rams' coaching staff brand new, he just wasn't going to stick around, even for $2.75 million.

The Rams will replace him with a full serving of 2011 draft pick Robert Quinn alongside Chris Long, but where could Hall go next? The best bet is a team that needs a pass-rusher but isn't expected to pay out the nose for one—anybody who's presently chasing after Peyton Manning and looking to win now could add to their depth and potentially get a solid season out of Hall on the cheap.

The Rams, for their part, have freed up nearly $20 million in cap space with the week's releases so far. It's a big haul for a team looking to remake itself in Jeff Fisher's image.

Later in the afternoon, word came that the team would release defensive back Ron Bartell and defensive end James Hall as well. According to the Post-Dispatch, these moves will save an additional $9.25 million.

Releasing Bartell frees up $6.25 million in cap space; releasing Hall frees up $3 million.

SB Nation Rams blog Turf Show Times says the team has around $30 million in cap space following these moves, which frees the organization up to potentially make some significant free agent acquisitions.
