Former Rams Coach Steve Spagnuolo Is Candidate To Take Saints' Gig

New Orleans Saints defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo, who was hired not long ago after being fired from the head coaching gig with the St. Louis Rams, is a possibility to replace the suspended Sean Payton as head coach of the Saints, according to the Associated Press via ESPN.

For the past three seasons, Spagnuolo was the head coach of St. Louis, but he failed to bring success to the Rams after bringing hope with an impressive run late in the 2010 season. The Rams couldn't carry that success over to 2011, though, stumbling badly as injuries limited key players like quarterback Sam Bradford.

Replacing Payton would likely be a tall task given the high expectations that were bestowed on this New Orleans team before the NFL levied major consequences on the organization for the bounty system scandal. Payton has been suspended by the league for a year, and it's unclear what his long-term status is with the Saints at this point.
