↵↵↵Carpenter said Monday that instead of pitching in his second All-Star Game tonight - he was on the 2006 roster but didn't play - he would rather see first-time All-Star Adam Wainwright get a chance to pitch.
↵"There's no question about it. And I'm going to tell Mr. Manuel that," Carpenter said, referring to National League manager Charlie Manuel of Philadelphia.
↵Wainwright, told by his Cardinals All-Star teammates to soak up as much of the All-Star atmosphere as he can, said, "I have no expectations or no understanding of how this works. I'm used to watching this game on TV while I'm making a hamburger."

I'd say he's in the running for Cardinals Quote Of The Year, but it's unfair to force other Cardinals to compete with Brendan Ryan, who locked things up for himself with this Spring Training metaphor, about what he learned from Skip Schumaker:
↵↵"I was looking for something incredibly profound," Ryan recalled. " 'Go out to Field 6 in the left-center gap and lift the stone. Dig a foot under the warning-track dirt and there you'll find a treasure box. Pull out the scroll and read it.' Instead ... nothing. He said the most un-profound thing ever. He said it was when he accepted that he was a major-league baseball player."
