John Mozeliak's New Contract

Outside of Allen Craig Worship circles—by which I mean the internet, including this very website—yesterday's big Cardinals news was the announcement that John Mozeliak would remain the General Manager of the team for another three seasons.

Mozeliak wasn't a glamor pick at the time—I was more enamored of Jeff Luhnow, who remains on board in his minor league capacity, and Cleveland Indians assistant and Allen Craig-level internet darling Chris Antonetti, who will take over for the Mark Shapiro in the Indians' front office starting in 2011.

But Mozeliak has been a surprisingly active GM, even though his public persona often seems calculated to achieve maximum boredom. I wouldn't have expected him to be the one to pull the trigger on the Matt Holliday deal, or the subsequent long-term contract, but there he was. He's also overseen increased pursuit of big-name international free agents and the occasional risky signability target.

If there's one suggestion I'd like to make to John Mozeliak as he works on three more solid years at the helm of the Best Fanbase In Baseball it's this: wait a little longer into the offseason before you start going after the fourth starters of the world, especially if the global economy appears on the verge of collapse.
