The Cardinals have signed former Royals closer Mike MacDougal to a minor league contract. MacDougal, known as "Mac The Ninth" back when his high-90s fastball and wipeout slider outweighed his propensity for walking a batter an inning, appeared without warning in a Memphis box score tonight, where he gave up two runs on two walks in an inning of work. No official announcement has yet been made.
Here's his minor league baseball page. MacDougal was released by the Nationals last week, after several months of indifferent play in their minor league system. Last year he picked up 20 saves for the Nationals but walked more batters than he struck out. At his best, though, MacDougal features an extremely high groundball rate, which Dave Duncan might like.
