Kentucky Derby 2011: The Peculiar Sensation Of Liking Horses On Facebook

The 2011 Kentucky Derby is this weekend, and upon checking their website—because I, like everyone else in the world, have no idea when the Kentucky Derby is—I realized that they had decided to go Full Web 2.0 in this, the 137th Kentucky Derby. Now you can Like horses, and I don't mean in the nine-year-old-girl sense; you can actually Like them on Facebook, as individuals. So far the leaders are popular betting picks Uncle Mo and Dialed In, with 2000 each; in the back of the pack, 170 likes behind the next horse, is poor Derby Kitten, who's been liked just 38 times since joining the Derby field Tuesday.

We at SB Nation St. Louis like underdogs, and underhorses, and underkittens, and at 30/1 Derby Kitten is the rare animal that manages to be all three. As a result, I'm happy to announce that we've [un]officially adopted the horse as our own. (Not that we have a lot of Facebook likes just lying around, exactly.)

So don't disappoint us, Derby Kitten: We have—well, we have one Facebook Like riding on this.
