Four teams from the Atlantic 10 conference received votes in The Associated Press preseason rankings, with the Saint Louis Billikens just missing out with 46 votes.
The Billikens finished second in the A-10 in 2011-12 behind Temple with a season record of 26-8, receiving an at-large bid to the 2012 NCAA Tournament. St. Louis went on to defeat Memphis in the second round before losing to Michigan, 65-61, the following game.
Also receiving votes from the conference was VCU, in their first year in the conference, who totaled 56 votes after making it to the third round in the NCAA Tournament. The Rams enjoyed one of the greatest postseason runs by a "Cinderella" team in 2011, losing to Butler in the Final Four.
Butler (33 votes) and Saint Joseph's (25 votes) also received votes in the AP preseason poll, with Butler also in the school's first season in the A-10 conference. Saint Joseph, considered to be the preseason conference favorite, lost in the first round of the 2012 NIT to Northern Iowa after losing to St. Bonaventure in the Atlantic 10 tournament quarterfinals.
