Eastern Illinois University has hired Jay Spoonhour, son of former Saint Louis University men's basketball coach Charlie Spoonhour, as the new head coach for men's basketball there, according to Jeff Goodman of CBS Sports.

Jay Spoonhour was previously at Moberly Area Community College in Moberly, MO, where he was the head coach for three years. Saint Louis University followers will recognize Jay, who was an assistant coach for his father from 1996-1999 with the Billikens. He was with the SLU team that went to the second round of the 1998 NCAA tournament. He was also an assistant coach for his father at UNLV.

The younger Spoonhour was a candidate for the head coaching job at Missouri State, where his father once coached, in the spring of 2011.

Charlie Spoonhour is a local coaching legend following area stints with SLU, 1992-1999, and at Missouri State from 1983-1992.
