After a disappointing series against the Minnesota WIld the St. Louis Blues scored early and hung on against the Vancouver Canucks, the top team in the NHL. Recently returned Andy McDonald and recent first-rounder Patrik Berglund turbocharged the Blues' faltering power play attack, and Alex Steen picked up his 16th goal of the season, second-most on the team, in between. The Canucks fell to 36-12-9, while the Blues improved to 25-21-9.

Jaroslav Halak, who'd struggled of late, outdueled white-hot Canucks goalie Robert Luongo—16-0-5 in his last in his last 21—stopping 23 shots out of 25 and holding the Canucks off after a third period goal seemed to portend another Blues collapse.

St. Louis Game Time conceded that this isn't a must-win game so long as the Blues remain between a rock and a playoff-contention hard place, but if you believe in momentum, putting away the top team in the NHL is a great chance to get some. Of course, now they have to wait for it—they won't play the Buffalo Sabres until this Friday, which should be just enough time for all that momentum to vanish.

The Blues aren't the luckiest team in the world.
