In a game that featured outstanding pitching performances from both starters, the St. Louis Cardinals dropped the series-finale against the Cleveland Indians courtesy of a three-run ninth inning from the visitors. Jason Kipnis hit his 10th home run of the season to push the Indians to the 4-1 victory.

With the score tied at one in the top of the ninth inning, it was Kipnis that delivered the key hit for the Indians. His three-run homer off of Jason Motte staked the Indians to the 4-1 lead, which Chris Perez finished off with his 20th save of the season.

Joe Kelly delivered an impressive effort on the mound in his MLB debut, allowing just one run and striking our four batters in five innings. However, he received little offensive help, as Ubaldo Jimenez was dominant. Jimenez allowed just one earned run in seven innings.

An injury to St. Louis Cardinals starting pitcher Jaime Garcia has opened up a spot in the team's rotation, which is, at least temporarily, going to be filled by 2009 third-round pick Joe Kelly. Kelly will make his major league debut on Sunday vs. the Cleveland Indians, and a win would give the Cardinals their second series victory in a row.

The 23-year-old Kelly was drafted out of UC Riverside in 2009, and has progressed through St. Louis' minor league system gradually without repeating any levels. He had a rough year in Double-A last season, posting a 5.01 ERA, but in Triple-A this year, he's managed to keep his ERA at 2.68. Kelly can get strikeouts, but he's also had problems with control throughout his pro career, and this year he's walked 21 batters in 72 innings.

Standing in the way of his first career victory is Indians starter Ubaldo Jimenez, who is looking to for some consistency after a May in which he posted three quality starts but also gave up seven earned runs in two other starts. In is last outing this past Tuesday, he gave up one earned run in 6.2 innings vs. the Detroit Tigers.

Needless to say, it has been a wild season for John Gaub. Gaub, who began the season with the Chicago Cubs, was claimed off waivers by the Tampa Bay Rays on April 5. Gaub stayed with the Rays organization until May 24, when he was claimed off waivers by the Texas Rangers. However, it was a short stay in Texas for Gaub, who was claimed off waivers by the St. Louis Cardinals today according to Jeff Wilson of the Fort Worth Star Telegram:

@JeffWilson_FWST: John Gaub, put on waivers Thursday to create a 40-man spot for Tanner Sheppers, has been claimed by St. Louis. We hardly knew ye. <s>#</s>rangers

Gaub, who was a 21st round pick out of Minnesota in 2006, had a strong season for the Chicago Cubs Triple-A team last season, recording a 3.42 ERA in 50 appearances. He has made 21 total appearances this season between the Rays and Rangers.

The St. Louis Cardinals certainly haven't been the same since starting the season 20-11, but they have still managed to stay at or above .500 for the entire year. It has been a fragile mark for the month of June, as the Cards have gone 3-5 and they have pushed down to the break-even point two times already during June. St. Louis is currently 30-29 overall and the season-long streak is still safe, but the team would prefer not to push their luck.

On Saturday, Kyle Lohse (5-1, 3.21 ERA) takes the mound for the Cards, starting opposite Indians pitcher Justin Masterson (2-5, 5.09 ERA). Here is the game time and TV broadcast information:

The Indians jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning on a double from catcher Carlos Santana and a groundout by center Michael Brantley, and that would just about be enough.

The Indians put up a run in the fourth, another in the fifth and then two more in the top of the seventh to go up 6-0. Cardinals first basemen Matt Adams would bring the score to 6-2 with a single in the bottom of that inning, but the Cardinals would get no closer, despite their 10 hits.

But he was out-dueled by Cleveland starter Josh Tomlin, who allowed only two earned runs in seven full innings.
