St. Louis Cardinals ace Chris Carpenter was cuffed for eight earned runs in four innings and a late rally was quashed by a rough performance from injured reliever Bryan Augenstein. The end result was a wild, 13-8 win for the Arizona Diamondbacks. Lance Berkman homered again for the Cardinals, along with David Freese and Colby Rasmus, and Albert Pujols went 3-5 to push his season average up to .200 in the loss. Justin Upton, Chris Young, and Juan Miranda homered for the Diamondbacks, who got RBI from seven players in the win.
Carpenter was shaky in every inning, and the Cardinals themselves failed to stop the Diamondbacks for an inning until the seventh, after the scoring was done on both sides. They may have lost two relievers in the bloodbath—rookie Bryan Augenstein is assured a spot on the DL after straining his groin in his second inning of work, while Brian Tallet broke a bone in his glove-hand trying to make a play at first base. He'll be evaluated this week before a roster move is made.
