Matt Holliday Return From Appendicitis This Weekend Unlikely Says Manager

Following his bout with appendicitis, Matt Holliday had hoped to return to the St. Louis Cardinals’ lineup sometime this weekend. He’ll be disappointed to learn, then, that Cardinals manager Tony LaRussa says Holliday’s chances of playing this weekend are “slim,” according to Fox Sports Midwest.

Holliday has played just in just one game this season, going 3-of-4 with a homer and two runs batted in. Without him, the Cardinals mustered just seven runs in three games against the Pittsburgh Pirates earlier this week. Their offense ranks 29th in the majors in runs scored (15) and 23rd in team batting average (.231).

The Cards visit the San Francisco Giants for a three game set beginning Friday afternoon. They likely won’t have their four-time All-Star slugger for their series against the defending World Series Champions, though they’ll at least avoid having to face Tim Lincecum on the mound. For St. Louis, the news gets worse before it gets better.
