Ryan Theriot's comments prior to Tuesday's St. Louis Cardinals-Chicago Cubs matchup managed to make him persona non grata with both Cardinals and Cubs fans. In Spring he said he was "finally on the right side of the rivalry" between the two teams, and Tuesday afternoon he was party to a radio show that characterized Cardinals fans as wearing "tank tops, jean shorts, and some Timberland boots."
↵It's tough to get yourself in hot water with both fanbases; in general, being unpopular with one will make you popular with the other by default. I think Steve Bartman has diplomatic immunity here.
↵But I can't blame Theriot for working both sides of the room. The Cardinals-Cubs rivalry is inherently ridiculous, a kind of pro wrestling-style baseball, and this kind of talk is just the right way for it to work. Next Theriot should cut a promo about how much Chicago-style pizza sucks, and then slam Ronnie Woo-Woo with a steel chair.
