The Boston Red Sox have checked in on free agent starting pitcher Kyle Lohse, according to Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe in a mailbag posted on Tuesday.
Lohse, who isn't expected to re-sign with the St. Louis Cardinals, is one of several free agents the Red Sox have reportedly been linked to (as has Lance Berkman, whose Cardinals days also are almost certainly through). Lohse could be one of several free agent pitchers who could benefit from Jeremy Guthrie's three-year, $25 million contract with the Kansas City Royals, as Ben Buchanan at SB Nation Boston Red Sox blog Over the Fence warns.
At 34, Lohse might be out of the age range the Red Sox are looking for, according to Cafardo, especially if he wants the three-year deal he reportedly seeks. Lohse is coming off a career year in St. Louis in which he went 16-3 with a 2.86 ERA in 33 games started.
