Double-A Springfield Cardinals named minor league team of year by Baseball America

The Cardinals Double-A affiliate won the Texas League title for the first time since rejoining the league in 2005.

The St. Louis Cardinals Double-A affiliate Springfield Cardinals were named the Minor League Team of the Year by Baseball America on Friday.

Springfield won its first Texas League title since rejoining the league in 2005. The Cardinals finished in first place in the second half of the season with a 42-26 record, ousted the Tulsa Drillers in five games in the North Division Finals and moved on to knock off the Frisco Rough Riders in four games in the league championship.

The Cardinals Double-A squad featured seven of Baseball America's Top 30 Prospects including Texas League Player of the Year, Oscar Taveras. The 20-year-old prospect led the Texas league in hitting with a .321 batting average, hit 23 home runs and drove in 94 RBI.

Springfield, helmed by first-year Double-A manager Mike Shildt, finished the season with a franchise-best 77-61 record, the top record in the North Division and the third best record in te Texas League.
