Lance Berkman Injury: Remember When The St. Louis Cardinals Had Lance Berkman?

Perhaps because the St. Louis Cardinals actually had depth at the position (or perhaps just because we were all expecting it after his awesome 2011), Lance Berkman's injury is the long-term Cardinal killer I'm most likely to forget. Chris Carpenter and Jaime Garcia have contributed to instability in the pitching staff, but at first base I had Matt Adams to watch for a while, and now the Cardinals have Allen Craig, who's been about as good this year as Berkman was last year.

All of which has made the blow much easier to take--if not actually worry-free. Neither Berkman nor Craig is particularly likely to play the rest of the season without spending time on or around the disabled list, and a very loose platoon could give the Cardinals even more impressive results than the ones they're seeing with Craig alone. Which leads us, finally, to the good news: Fox Sports Midwest is reporting that Berkman is set to rejoin the Cardinals over the weekend, to continue his rehab with the team.

Which is pretty exciting, even--or maybe especially--if you've forgotten that Berkman was ever a Cardinal to begin with.
