Derek Anderson has been benched by the Arizona Cardinals in favor of Max Hall, with the team down 16-6 to the St. Louis Rams with three minutes to go in the third quarter. Anderson was 7-for-20 with 93 yards passing and an interception, a week after getting involved in a manufactured controversy involving laughter on the sidelines.
Things weren’t much better for Hall in his first drive. After getting sacked by O.J. Atogwe on first down, he threw an incomplete pass and then was intercepted downfield by Bradley Fletcher.
Hall, a rookie out of BYU, was 38-for-75 with 360 yards and five interceptions in a five game stint at quarterback for the Cardinals earlier this season. Anderson has thrown seven touchdowns and 10 interceptions in 11 games at quarterback, and has struggled—as predicted—to replace the kind of production and efficiency offered by the retired Kurt Warner.
I don’t know who the Cardinals’ third-string quarterback is, but with Matt Leinart long gone it might be that they’re a few ugly plays away from a Keith Null situation of their own.
