Jason Smith Injury Update: St. Louis Rams RT Placed On IR

The Rams former first round pick continues to struggle with serious concussion issues.

According to the official St. Louis Rams blog, the Rams have placed starting right tackle and 3rd-year pro Jason Smith on the injured reserve (IR) with continued concussion problems:

The Rams made it official with RT Jason Smith on Friday, placing him on injured reserve and ending his season with lingering concussion symptoms.

Smith was the second overall pick of the St. Louis Rams in the 2009 NFL Draft. Despite his draft pedigree, Smith has started only 23 games for the Rams through three seasons, having suffered from concussion issues in his rookie year too.

According to head coach Steve Spagnuolo, the team is attempting to prevent long-term issues with Smith:

"We are going to make sure that we do everything possible to do the right thing, get him with the right people," coach Steve Spagnuolo said. "I think we’ve done that to this point but it just seemed like the right thing to do right now."

Smith has been out since late October.
