2011 NFL Draft: Will Blaine Gabbert Or Cam Newton Crush Jimmy Clausen's Spirits?

This is enough to make a man turn his own Google Alert off—Missouri quarterback Blaine Gabbert is just one of two quarterback prospects, along with Cam Newton, who's set to make Jimmy Clausen's life miserable on April 28. Ahead of the 2011 NFL Draft they're making his life miserable by providing the occasion for most of his appearances on news aggregators.

At SB Nation we're helping that along in our mock drafts, where this week Blaine Gabbert has sneaked past Cam Newton on the Clausen-crushing front. Brian Galliford suggests it's a matter of intangibles vs. star power, which seems, to me, like one set of intangibles against another. I think they go with Newton because Gabbert isn't quite star enough to rouse a dead fanbase; in terms of draft stock and fame he's basically this year's... Jimmy Clausen.

This kind of closed-off intrigue is kind of claustrophobic—there's only so much one can say about the merits of Cam Newton and Blaine Gabbert, and only so much one wants to. All things considered I prefer being a Rams fan, where I can just continue to go about my Single White Female intrigue with Julio Jones.
