Thursday Night Football Could Escape NFL Network, Still Be Awkwardly Timed

Earlier this month we mentioned that part of the CBA that seems destined, eventually, to end the NFL lockout involved one terrible sacrifice on the part of NFL fans: The expansion of Thursday Night Football, in the cable Siberia known as NFL Network, to 16 weeks from its current eight. While that still may be true, it looks like the NFL has a twist in mind: Those first eight games might go on some other network, with the current rumors being TNT, TBS, or Versus.

This solves one problem with Thursday Night Football, in that—if it hits one of the Turner networks, at least—I might be able to watch it. Now for the other problem: Thursday is a really weird time to watch football. Currently I'm busy with The Office, 30 Rock, and Parks and Recreation, for one thing; for another it just doesn't feel like a football day. Monday's a big deal, and Sunday's the day given over entirely to football on TV; Thursday's just another night, one that leaves us with another day of work or school before the weekend comes and we begin to think about football in earnest.

Don't get me wrong: I'm glad the NFL Network isn't being pushed any more than usual, but Thursday Night Football's still a terrible idea.
