Rams Trade Rumors: Is St. Louis A Potential Suitor For 49ers CB Shawntae Spencer?

San Francisco 49ers cornerback Shawntae Spencer had trouble cracking into the team's cornerback rotation in 2012, and according to CSN Bay Area's Matt Maiocco, the team is expected to give Spencer permission to seek a trade.

Spencer, 30, an eight-year veteran, does not appear to fit into the 49ers' plans after he ended the season as the No. 5 cornerback. Spencer did not suit up for either of the 49ers' two playoff games as one of the team's active 46 players.

Spencer is scheduled to make $3.3 million, including a $100,000 workout bonus, a sum of money the 49ers do not appear likely to commit to him in 2012.

Spencer, who started 32 consecutive games for San Francisco in 2009 and 2010, was clearly frustrated by the lack of playing time during the 2011 season, and now he may be on his way out the door. Maiocco believes the St. Louis Rams could be one of the teams interested in his services, since they could use some help in the secondary.
