Once-great wide receiver Torry Holt is expected to sign a one-year contract with the St. Louis Rams before retiring the next day, according to Tony Softli of ESPN Radio. The move will allow Holt, one of the best wide receivers in recent memory, to retire with the team that he spent nearly his entire career with.
Drafted by the Rams with the sixth overall pick in the 1999 NFL Draft, Holt quickly established himself as one of the best wideouts in the entire sport. His breakout came in 2000, his second season with the team, as the Rams suddenly turned into "The Greatest Show on Turf."
During that 2000 season, Holt caught 82 catches for a league-leading 1635 yards and six touchdowns as a 24-year-old. Over an eight-year period spanning from 2000 through 2007, Holt averaged 94 catches, 1384 receiving yards and eight touchdowns per season, numbers that clearly reflect how good he was.
But following some decline during the 2008 season, Holt left the Rams to join the Jacksonville Jaguars for the 2009 season. Starting 12 of the 15 games he appeared in for Jacksonville, Holt caught 51 balls for 722 yards but failed to score a single touchdown. He hasn't played in the NFL since retiring following that season.
